Bonjam everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from the Creepy Steeple! Well.. Outside the Creepy Steeple. I’m trying to find a way in, but I think I need a new partner..
???: “Well, well, well, if it isn’t The Worst Aifos!”
*gasp* Is that-!? My edgy doppelgänger, Sophie!? What are you doing here!?
Sophie: “I told you to stop calling me Sophie!
Tsch.. And what am I doing here? First you forget to invite me to your doppelgänger post, and now you want to leave me out again? Sorry, no dice, First!”
I never said to go away.. Ooh, maybe you’re the new partner I need to get in!
We got a post first, though!
When done well, ghosts can be some of the coolest enemies in video games. Spectres of long dead people, clinging onto this world for one reason or another. And of course, if you have ghosts, you have haunted [insert place here]!
Just like ghosts themselves, these haunted structures can be some of the coolest levels in games when handled right! Maybe I’m just relapsing into my edgy goth phase, but I wanna talk sbout ghosts, so we’re gonna talk about ghodts!
Tl;dr? Here’s my point!
Favorite haunted levels in games?
Edit; For clarification, haunted doesn’t just mean creepy. It refers specifically to areas haunted by ghosts and/or incorporeal beings.
My answer:
First sn honorable mention. The Hall of Champions from Shovel Knight inspired the thread. That was a fun level.
But, my favorite haunted level would have to be the Creepy Steeple, from Chapter 4 of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. When you first enter the Steeple, it’s not actually haunted, however in order to progress you have to open a chest in the basement, causing hundreds of ghosts to fly out. Now haunted as can be, linger in the lobby and they’ll throw you out before long.
While you can just put up with this, if you use a spin hammer to knock the ghosts trying to drag you outside away one too many times, they’ll fuse into a giant mega Boo, creating one of the game’s two optional bosses. The Boos will stop trying to throw you out, but they will become enemies.
Of course, there’s more to it than that. Whether or not he’s a ghost is debatable, but the lord of the Steeple is an unknown shapeshifter, who steals Mario’s body. As a shadow of his former self (literally) Mario teams up with former bad guy Vivian, to sneak into the hidden chambers of the Steeple through the well, to learn the doppelgänger’s name, and get Mario’s body back.
I just love how this chapter plays out, and its dark whimsy aesthetic is perfect!
But that’s all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

4 RespuestasHalloween Town from the Kingdom Hearts series
ok, it’s really from The Nightmare Before Christmas, but that’s not a game so I couldn’t count it...
