In Defense of the Traveler: A Lore discussion

Every time we visit Mara’s Court in the full curse week we always see her dissing the Traveler and it’s chosen. She would’ve killed it if she had the chance, the travelers chosen’s presence is disrespectful, she doesn’t care about Caydes death (RIP) and doesn’t like what the traveler makes the awoken guardians into. This has lead into a full on debate and (if the leaks are true) to full out war within the ranks of the Guardians. I am here to tell you that I side with Shin Malphur and the Traveler and I’ll tell you why. First things first. It can be inferred from what Mara says that she thinks the Traveler created the Guardians as a Proxy army to protect itself and it brought the darkness here. But here’s the thing: if the Traveler didn’t choose us, it would make little difference. If the darkness killed the traveler it would still spread throughout the galaxy and it seems like it did, with the darkness ships on the edge of our Solar system. It chose us because it saw that unlike the Fallen, we were worthy vessels to combat the darkness. It was giving us the tools to defend ourselves, not it, because the Traveler sacrificed itself to create the ghosts, whiteout any knowledge that humanity would protect it. It could have easily left the Solar system (yes, I know the theory about Rasputin shooting the traveler but that has been refuted by Myelin games). Even when it reawoke, it still protected humanity by killing Ghaul and even giving us more supers to use in battle. Now we move on to Mara’s other statement, about what the traveler did to her Awoken subjects. The reason the awoken became guardians in the first place was because they came to help their ancestors: Humanity. They ceased being her subjects when they went against her orders to stay neutral. Now, about the Shadows of Yor. They are, simply put, not good. You cannot dabble with the darkness. You can have knowledge of it, but what they’re doing is corrupting themselves. (This is similar to the Jedi Orders problem in the Star Wars prequels. They forbid even learning about the Dark side, and thus it led to their downfall) All of this I have said to you leads me to the decision of not becoming a Dredgen and using Malfeasance (the Gun sucks anyway) and if the Drifter gives us Thorn in Joker’s wild, he can keep it. The Last Word is better. I am done. Feel free to comment and tell me if i missed anything, but please be respectful. I will see you in the wilds.

  •
the universe is vast and powerful filled with the forces of darkness and light. And we are only pawns in this universal game(I hate saying that). The traveler chose sol because it wanted to stop running and fight against the darkness. What is the traveler though, what is the darkness and the light. Does t really matter, for we are just small pawns? Well yes it matters. For the joy is in solving the mysteries of the universe. Unlike others I believe there is a chance that the traveler isn’t the only source of the light, and others are facing the same battle somewhere.
Say again? You ask, are we alone here? You mean to ask if we are the only good that lives in the light of our sun, do you not? You mean to ask, do we have allies? Do we have distant allies, ignoring our plight, either too weak to fight or too afraid to show their faces? I, too, have been cursed by these questions. What if I told you that eons beyond the void lie worlds that do yearn to aid in our struggle? What if I told you there is a way to grant them passage into your mind, to let them guide your eye against our one true enemy? That they have told me that the dusk of the pyramid draws nigh? Would you believe me?
Either way I think I got off topic. The traveler chose our system to fight. And fight it shall
• The Traveler didn’t see just the humans. It saw the sun and the nine heavenly bodies that orbit it and listened to their spherical symphony. The Sol system has something that no other previous system the Traveler fled to has. When it speaks, it summons death. But when it sings and resonates with other heavenly voices, it will defeat the Darkness and illuminate our world with the light of hope.

To me I don’t think it will come down to a matter of who’s good and who’s evil. We are in a long ass war with the dark and we just happen to be on the side of the light. Every villain is the hero of their own story and history is written by the winners. So there’s no good or evil just whoever survives. That being said if given the choice I would remain in the light. We have seen what happens to guardians who try to walk on both paths. Remember the words of the exo stranger: “A side must be chosen, little light. Even if it’s the wrong one.”.

    • Everyone that works for the traveler has crappy weapons and crappy drop rates. If the darkness has better weapons (thorn) and better drop rates then sign me up and I’ll melt that big golf ball.

        • The jedii had some amongst their ranks who relied too much on the darkside of the force. They also had some who relies too much on the lightside. They always sought to be balanced (similar to Ulan-Tan’s teachings). We need to be balanced unlike the Crucible! Until the darkside users rose and were struck down by the resilient lightside jedii. Then the darkside festered and overcame the newly named Jedi. Then the lightside came back. Then lord ticklfingers can and struck down the jedi. Then the new republic and first order. Back and forth and back and forth.

        • Awesome topic. I firmly believe that destiny will end in us fighting the traveler. Eventually he will be fully awaken. Him and Rasputin will have a good old fashion grudge match and we will have to take out both of them. How insane would that be ? I’m D2 there are small hints ( in some cases mission’s ) where light can be and has been harvested. Even manufactured!

          • The darkness and the traveler exists in cosmic ballance and if ballance is disturbed the universe will work to rite itself. Light and Dark will always fight for control but you can not fully and permanently ileminate one or the other. A new champion will always show up. On malf. Its a good gun, its super good against taken and it is amazing on the stupid phalanks sheilds since they still take damage. Its deffinatley more for gambit but its a decent handcannon overall.

          • Ghosts are able to travel through space though it isnt shown dirrectly how.
evidently pulled pork made it to the tangled shore and somehow got into the dreaming city
We know this since one of the lore tabs or grimiore speak of the ghosts encountering the nine. What im getting at is awoken guardians could have been revived by a ghost in the reef as guardians are still being found by lone ghosts so not all awoken guardians are not reef born.

          • Point is, the traveler is most likely working in it's own self interest. It just so happens that that involves defeating the Darkness, that thing looking to wipe out all life. So.... it's not exactly like it's the worst idea to go along with the whole living weapon thing.

          • Malfeasance = situational fun. Example: Four stack of Malfeasance in Gambit with rift and Lunafaction boots and watch the boss melt. Even with only a two stack it's still fun. But for your main point... The traveler sucks. It's not doing much. What's the point of its existence? To just be trapped with ease by big potato looking Cabal? It should just get exploded and have our guardian's story go a different direction.

            • Hold on, the Darkness would never "kill" the Traveler. The Darkness wouldn't exist if the Traveler was destroyed. If you could give up the Light to get rid of the Darkness for good, would Guardians do it? This is what D3 is going to be about. If you want the Light to win, then you have to be willing to give it up. Otherwise, Guardians are just vessels that collect energy for the Traveler to reawaken through Death and then fleeing again and again, doing the same process over and over leaving the precious races abandoned by it to be consumed by Darkness, reshaped and repurposed into their Final forms. The only thing the Darkness wants is to reclaim the Traveler's power once again to become whole, and in so doing. Everything in the material realm would become Nothing.

              • I don’t trust the traveler fully. Power is not given. and like Mara says, “Too much of a good thing will make you sick.” We must find balance

                  • It still baffles me that the Darkness itself is going after an AGENT of the light, not the Light itself. And besides, no matter what I'll always serve the traveler, not because it gave us power or wealth but because it deserves a little compassion in return for all it tries to achieve. As for welding the Darkness in the way of weapons of sorrow... The Darkness philosophy is in itself flawed and using the darkness against itself is exactly what it wants/deserves
