Never heard of 'im. Of the few songs I listened to, I'd say I liked it if it weren't for the TOP vibes I get from him. Seems like the kind of rap that people who shit on the genre would listen to and blindly praise as being what rap should be 🙄.
Before you feel the unnecessary need to defend yourself from that second statement, I'm not talking about you nor am I saying you think that. However, if the shoe fits...
• I don't really like rap at all. Just this guy. To me he doesn't sound like he fits the rap genre

  • Like I said, the only reason he's considered rap is because he talks fast. His music doesn't fit most of the genre. He's got a different sound

  •
Like I said, the only reason he's considered rap is because he talks fast.
Lmao, talking fast isn't a key identifying feature of rap... There are lots of rappers with relatively slow flows
His music doesn't fit most of the genre.
There's really no need for me to ask, given the bit quoted above is a good indication, but... How exactly would you know what does or doesn't "fit 'most' of the genre" when you don't even listen to it? There are many different styles and forms of rap just as there are many styles and forms of rock, metal, jazz, electronic, et cetera.
He's got a different sound
Not really.

  • He's a rapper because he talks fast. If he didn't talk fast he'd probably be alt or pop or something. My brother listens to rap a lot so I'm familiar with the genre. Most of his songs don't sound much like today's rap and don't seem to catch the ears of rap fans. He's sort of like Tyler Joseph. He raps fast in a lot of his songs, but you could hardly say he's of the rap genre

I'm not caring about your dislike of rap, so that's not what I'm referring to when I said stop. I said "stop", 'cause you clearly don't know what you're on about in regards to the genre. You literally just said he's a rapper (for the second time) 'cause he talks fast, even though I just explained why that was wrong. Then there's the fact you're of the impression you know anything about the genre simply 'cause you have a brother who listens to it... That's like me saying I'm well versed in rockabilly and industrial 'cause my sister likes it... You don't know what you're on about and that's fine. You don't like rap and that's also fine. This has only went to this length 'cause I wanted to know what makes a rather basic indie rapper with occasional burst of mumbled fast flows the one exception, but I've surmised the reasoning just from what you've said you think typifies him as rap or not rap. Edit: I need to keep in mind you're the same person who refused to listen to multiple people telling you that groups like MGMT are pop artist... So I'm not going any further with this.

I guess you just look at things differently. I've already explained my reasoning for disliking rap, and liking Watsky. I don't see why this is worth arguing. I simply see him outside of the rap spectrum and I am familiar with the genre because it's constantly playing in my house because of my brother. We talk about music a lot and I know a lot of rap based from what I've heard from the media, what he's told me, and classics that I used to listen to when I was younger. I'm familiar with rap because I'm surrounded by it and though I personally don't find the entire genre enjoyable, I still pick up on it Also, I don't even know how you remember this, but the MGMT argument still stands. MGMT are not a pop band, but they have ironically made pop songs. Kids, Electric Feel, and Time To Pretend were all made as mock pop songs. They've said so many times. They got famous off of making fun of pop music. If you've heard their other songs you'd definitely not think something like Flash Delirium or When You Die is pop.

Honestly, I'm not sure I see it the same way as you either. With how varied and interesting rap is as a genre, it just seems wrong to say he doesn't fit in. He's alright, but in sheer poeticism artists like Sadistik, Eyedea or Slug stomp him out. Coincidentally, his voice is almost identical to Eyedea's in most songs. I also disagree with this notion that to be a rapper you have to talk fast. Red Pill immediately comes to mind. I don't doubt that you hear a lot of rap thanks to your brother, but how much do you actually listen to?

Rap is a very open genre, and by definition he is a rapper, but just to me he seems like less of a rapper and more of an alt or pop artist. Never did I say rapper have to rap fast. I was implying that the only reason Watsky is considered a rapper is because he raps fast. If he didn't talk fast and kept his current sound, it wouldn't be rap at all. I listen to quite a bit of rap. Whether or not I like the song, I pay attention to all music. I haven't yet heard another "rapper" like Watsky, though I don't doubt they exist. It's just in my own thoughts that I don't see him as a rapper. Feel free to disagree but it's just me and my personal experience with rap and other music.

  • I listen to a lot of alt rock and other odd genres. His tunes, choruses, and everything else could fit into an indie alt artists sound
