Idk if it's true or not, but since i stopped using medallions my rng exotic luck went from (omg i'm quitting this game to okay i think i like this)
Maybe i'm wrong, but in your situation i don't think it matters. So give it a try

Strikes, Strikes, Strikes. And make sure all 3 of you pop Boons of the Vanguard at the beginning. Read off what gift you've given. I've seen 1 exotic gift from that which is cool. But, with this setup, I currently have all new Titan exotics, and 2 of the Hunter exotics. Trinity Ghoul, Lord of Wolves, Black Talon. It works, but you have a much higher chance when playing with friends.

Oh, additionally, any powerful enemy (orange health bar) and above has a chance to drop exotics. A lot of people like to speed run strikes when grouping with blueberries, but don't do that if you're with a group. Kill all the things, don't skip. A handful of my exotics simply dropped from killing enemies. When you hear that shining chime sound, you'll freak out and be immediately looking for the gold engram. Don't be disappointed if it's a Y1 exotic though. You'll get more in time.

I rarely use them as I forget most the time. I dunno tbh I just don't like wasting my time if that makes sense.

Do strikes and use blue boons on occasion it says all players will receive an exotic gift when you use it I got all year one and dlc ones like this ,it was glitches when forsaken came out but I believe it's fixed now buddy

Vanguard boons press right on zavala and there they are ,it's no miracle cure but strikes always seem the best for exotics these activate the exotic buff only around eighth of the time but you can tell because your teammates will have a message saying on completion of this strike all members will receive an exotic gift,something to that effect

You know vanguard boons you buy from zavala press right on the d pad while talking to him and you'll see them buddy

And they can give you exotics?? I remember seeing something about a exotic gift during a strike in the bottom left but I never got anything.
