This was the first thing I noticed in Destiny 2’s homecoming. The city has no organized defense fleet. Well..it does but not really. Allow me to explain. The city doesn’t have a dedicated Space fairing navy. I’m calling it a navy because the term fleet is used. Yes, they have things like the Dead Orbit fleet, but they are mostly just Guardian ships. There are absolutely NO capital ships. NO frigates. (Not that I know of currently.) Strategically speaking, this is military suicide. Come to think of it, you CAN see two fairly large ships landed on Titan but it’s unclear if it’s city made or golden age. Anyways. In a universe like destiny, space warfare is arguably more crucial than ground warfare. As what use is a tank when it can be bombarded from orbit. Ghaul was a very smart military commander. Aside from the fact that he cut the guardians off from their light, which was a feat of its own, I can see that he made use of capital ships, frigates, and Cruisers. In other words, AIR SUPERIORITY. He couldn’t bombard the city from orbit for two major reasons. A. His goal was the Traveler, orbital bombardment could hit the traveler, and his goal was to block, and then siphon the light, not attack it. B. Even if the bombardment didn’t harm the Traveler, it would make the city less defendable in the case of a counter offensive. I’m fairly certain Ghaul could have sent down more red legion soldiers early on but he sent the bulk of the force down the moment it was clear
That guardians were no longer an issue. You see, if the city had an active fleet that had MORE than just free roaming guardian ships, it’s possible that the city could have fended off the Red Legion. If there is more about some fleet of capital ships that the city has, then let me know. And let me know if you want me to go over how I would have the city’s defenses set up.
