Why is "the Community" So Small Right Now?

I feel that Forsaken is probably the best expansion that Destiny has ever had. There is so much to do, granted a lot of it is quite challenging (pls save your this game is to easy comments if you have them). But as I continue to put hours into Forsaken doing quests, or playing for exotics, etc.. I watch as my friends list and clan list get smaller and smaller. And by smaller I mean down to me and 2 others. And so if thats happening with my group, its most certainly happening through out the Destiny community. Its even apparent on these forums. Where there used to be a couple thousand comments on an extremely popular thread, now theres maybe a couple hundred. Its obvious that Forsaken is good, but the player base from what Ive seen is so low and uninterested and I cant figure out why. Is it rewards? Reasons to obtain things? Low exotic drop rates? Lackluster quest exotics? Destiny burnout? All of the above? Its weird man. *on a side note....why are so many people terrible at Gambit? I swear its the players that influence Bungie's decisions and most are so terrible irs no wonder D2 was dumbed down to what it was. Again, its better now, but yeah....

The grind has become too repetitive and time wasting for me. I can't even get to 600 because after an hour or so pf being on it I'm just ready to get off. I left my clan because it became a clique of certain ppl that only play together, and you pretty much have to beg to get help. I've been playing since Y1 D1, and as much as I love the game (mainly the lore) I just cant commit myself or my money to it anymore.

  • I agree Forsaken is probably the best DLC Destiny has had but to me D1 felt like a online life. Yes I had to work at a few things like farming on the exotic sword quests but there was plenty of fun to be had with other things. D2 just feels like a online job where I’m being paid bellow minimum wage.

“It’s the economy, stupid....” This famous quote from the 1992 Presidential campaign sums it up. 1. The progression system has throttled progression and made the game very grindy, while limiting player freedom. The infusion economy enforced a painful and completely unnecessary choice between power and build variety, that sabotages the game’s primary reward loop. 2. So people who don’t enjoy grinding for the sake of grinding don’t find this arrangement to be very fun. Reaching max power and level cap is not an “accomplishment” that loot-based gamers value or respect....and the hopelessly sabotaged the one they do——min-maxing and build-optimizing. Then add all the competition out there in The form of more enjoyable RPGs..... 3. Matchmaking in pvp is a dumpster fire of pubstomping...,and the solo player experience is just miserable.. I’ve quit playing regular Crucible and Iron Banner over it. If the changes to Gambit don’t improve things I’ll quit that playlist too. Bungie needs to stop catering to streamers and content creator business models. They are not your average player and don’t speak to what is in the best interests of THE GAME. As a group they speak to what is in the interests of their own pockets. Bungie needs to continue the direct player outreach they started and get to know their TYPICAL player. Who they are and what they want. And stop forcing other agendas on them.

They really screwed themselves with Vanilla and the first two dlcs. As amazing as Forsaken is they lost old players for good and anyone new they were trying to gain with the casual approach left just like anyone could have told you they would. Most people are casuals plain and simple. Most people buy a shooter because they think it looks cool and aren't ready for RPG elements, raids etc. They were never going to stay to begin with, save for a few, yet Bungie catered to them for a while and lost old fans. Now they've learned their lesson hopefully it seems but they will still never get all those old vets back who quit.

        • You’re taking a walk in a forest and you happen to come across a huge lake. Excited as you are you decide to for a dip and strip down to just your underwear. You find a good spot to jump in and scream with excitement as you jump and as you hit the lake you break your ankles, bruise your back and bang your head. This is because the lake is only 3cm deep. Destiny is that lake.

        • There are many factors, like new games come around every month so people are looking for something new and exciting, etc There are still lots of problems inside D2, like, in gambit there is not auto refill mechanism to replace the player who quit and leaving an incomplete team around ; too much unnecessary grinding for a specific stuff. I started playing D2 from yr1 the Red War. Red War's story, compare to Forsaken , is much richer, more campaigns than Forsaken Expansion. The Forsaken just added 2 maps, 1 raid, some specific loots, 6 campaigns on the shore, repeated ascendant and activities on Dream City .... It is some kind of boring if I just wondering around by myself .

        • People have been burned to many times by bungies/ activisions actions. So they're is a lack of trust and faith in the brand. Plus there are so many games out now and next year is stacked as well.

        • The problem with Destiny is it is not a game. It is a second job. Gamers like to play games, have fun progressing, and then move on to other games. This game does not allow that. Progression is not fun and is timegated. The community will not allow breaks between content so we get very short 4-5 hours of lackluster content followed by hundreds of hours of fake grind and RNG. It seems like Bungie has hired more marketing professionals and psychologist to determine how to get people addicted than actual game creators.

        • My theory, I have seen this in other games, is that they all went to trashnite, I mean fortnite. This saddens me as so many games have fewer players due to this abomination of a game. (Half of my friends list plays 100% fortnite)

            • The game was turned the right direction in terms of story, worlds, and things to do. But the things to earn and progress systems suffered. It's insane the amount of things you have to get in order to infuse 1 weapon higher...especially if you put destiny on the shelf after Warmind, or are only getting into Destiny 2 now. As for collectors and hunting...the RNG is much too harsh, especially for exotics and strike exclusives. Some people run 50+ nightfalls in a week and still don't see a weapon drop. Overall I enjoyed Forsaken the first few weeks...but the new grind to get things makes the game feel like work...videogames should never feel like a job.

            • The community is shrinking for simple reasons. The story and raid were fun. The first time you played them. After that the drop off in enjoyment was extreme because there was no real challenge and it was rinse and repeat of the same (unpopular opinion here) mediocre raid and story encounters. Last Wish falls short of every D1 raid in terms of fun. Not going to argue that. So the PvE content isn’t keeping people playing because it’s not that fun or challenging, and then there is the time gating and seasons. Bleh, it’s a really stupid idea to time gate so much content and seasons are just an awful idea period. Then there’s the PvP dumpster fire. Again, big problem is lack of fun. Sure I can go in and meta spam my way to some boring wins. Sure I can play Mayhem for fun...oh wait. Lag, matchmaking, lack of anything even close to weapon or super balance...this isn’t what any PvP experience ought to be like. I’ve got thousands of hours between D1 and D2. But Forsaken has bored me into giving up on Destiny. That’s just the truth. Forsaken has lots to do but it’s all fairly boring and time gating makes that even worse.

              • Because it’s toxic ass can’t take the blame for ruining a game they thought was shit in the first place, that’s why. PvP douchebags don’t think about the pve players before calling for nerfs, raid lfg has always been asking for more than average basically right after a raid came out and no one was ready for it, people blaming streamers for shit they caused because, let’s face it, there’s very few guys streaming D2 nowadays. That’s just the tip of the iceberg my friend, and it gets much more acidic as you go further in from the tip.

                • 3 Reasons 1. Most people have done most of everything. Beat the Raid 15 times. Got Redrix and Luna's. Beat the Meatball a dozen or so times. Got all characters to 600. Unlocked secret emblems. Etc. 2. There are so many new games out for Xbox, Switch, PS and continuing to release. 3. Destiny did a good job with Forsaken but lost a lot of their fan base for previously being poo. I have doubts black armory will be epic, probably just more of the same.

                • In my opinion --- 3 things = Matchmaking, Balance, Connection Matchmaking - Trash is as good as you can describe. Almost every game you either stomp or get get stomped. People constantly leaving, etc.... Balance - Both Gambit and Crucible are challenging to play to play for new players. I tried to get 5 friends to sign up using the refer a friend program. All passed after playing crucible and gambit. People can debate all they want about SBMM vs. CBMM but fact is, new players don't want to get pub stomped by stacked teams with, lunas, NF, Sleeper, Queen, etc... Three of my friends were hard core D1 Trials players. They carried me to first and only visit to the lighthouse in D1. The thought D2 crucible was laughable compared to D1 and decided to pass Connection - P2P is trash. Dedicated servers are a must. Two of my friends passed solely for this reason. How can a AAA title not use dedicated servers? It's irresponsible at this point. They encourage DDOS and Cheating by turning a blind eye to what they know is going on. Again, these are my opinions. I play D2 quite a bit and still enjoy the game. I'm just bummed I couldn't find one friend who would sign up.

                  • Basically all the above. Forsaken is good but it caters to only dedicated hardcore players. Self proclaimed “hardcore” players are a minority in this game. Slow grind with little payoff. Exotics that have a crap drop rate yet ur at a disadvantage if u don’t have them. Forsaken is good if ur dedicated and have time. But if someone asks if it’s worth buying then the answer is no. Because if you have to ask then you are dedicated enough to b willing to put in a lot of time for a chance at a small reward

                    • An empty grind is not what the game needs. The lack of interesting items in the loot pool. Have you got one with outlaw and kill clip? yup, have you got one with rampage and kill clip? yup well then you have got everything there ever will be in that weapon. Armor perks mean little to nothing.....still. There is absolutely no chase. Exotics that have a zero drop rate doesn't make players chase on it makes them leave. I have had exactly two exotic armor pieces drop in a hell a lot of play time. Both those two exotic armor pieces were absolute shite. Get the point? I hope someone does because last I heard Bungie was thinking they need to double down on what they came up with here in Mistaken....Sorry I mean Forsaken.

                      • like others have said....tons of issues. a couple that really stand out are : too much grind for not enough rewards. i don't want them to hand out exotics like candy. but c'mon. we're, what, like 2 or 3 months into thiis DLC... and the Forsaken exotics are just not dropping. i've put a ton of hours into this DLC and i've only gotten a couple of the weapons, and 1 armor. exotic engrams are so hard to come by in the first place... and then it drops a year 1 exotic. ugh. the economy is just stupid. masterwork cores or whatever they're called now are just too painful to get, to easy to burn through. this last update helped a little (with the spider bounties giving 1 core), but still the whole system sucks.

                      • While Forsaken was a huge step in the right direction it was also an overstep. Too close to the Dark & you freeze to death, Too close to the light & you burn to death. The game is EXTREMELY new player & returning player unfriendly, to the point where new/returning players feel punished for being new. The economy is absurdly broken, the grind is insane, & the progression is flawed. To point out a few select specifics... 1. Infusion This system is flawed & it's an extreme turn off for New - Intermediate players. It limits players in choice, punishes experimentation, punishes owning different loadouts/gear sets & creates an unwelcoming progression experience. It needs to be reverted to a simple 1 to 1 process & then be done with it. Cores need to go period. Infusion was one of the biggest issues my coworkers & classmates had before they quit. 2. Too much Grind Grind is very good for looters & RPGs but unrewarding & uninteresting grinds are the opposite. I myself went 2 weeks & only grew 5 Power levels. Why? RNG gave me nothing but Heavy Weapons. Because of this my drops all were within the same threshold of levels. Which killed my desire to play. I literally dedicated myself on Tuesday to do all Spider bounties, & power engram tasks...and to leave empty handed was disheartening. Additionally for my friends it made the game a chore/a second job. Why leave work to come home to unwind by logging into another job? 3. Matchmaking is as broken as ever I didn't PvP but my coworkers & classmates did. Then they stopped cold turkey. The SBMM mode is filled with modes that were not fun. The CBMM mode had fun modes but is filled with top tier players, clans, & full teams. So small teams & solo players are just there to boost the kill count. Overall Bungie needs to find that balance they had with Rise of Iron. It needs to poll/ask the IN-GAME playerbase about what it enjoys, hates, and desires. Not ask streamers (who have their own paychecks & reputations on their minds), & not forum users (which is less than 15% of the game's community). I myself stopped playing finally. After all my friends stopped during Festival of the Lost. I hung in there but eventually it became a "Why am I even bothering?" My coworkers would ask: "Are you even having fun playing?" My classmates would ask: "What drives you to keep playing?" Eventually I realized my answers were: "No." & "I'm not sure anymore." Then I stopped. I went back to play other games: Warframe, RDR2, Spiderman, ESO, & I'm having fun again. I check in every so often to see if a patch hit to hopefully improve things but...I'm slowly starting to give up on that. Sorry for the melancholy post. Just being upfront. Forsaken was fun...until the campaign was cleared. Then it became a job, a job where you get written up for doing as your told.
