It annoys me that we’ve never had a boss fight like Templar since vog. Every boss makes you feel like the encounter is controlling you where in the Templar you felt like you were controlling the encounter.
The only thing that you needed to do to start a damage phase was charge the relic super, which led to a fast paced fight with a lot of short damage phases that you really needed to coordinate your team to get the most out of them.
Also blocking his teleport. Why haven’t we seen anything like that since vog? The option to make an encounter harder in order to speed things up.
We’ve had so many long encounters solely due to the fact that we have to please so many phases of mechanics and not because the fight itself is challenging. Meanwhile templar could take a while if you wanted to play it safe, or you could speed things up by splitting up your team and spawning more challenging adds. It’s honestly a master piece of a boss fight IMO

That development team was gone shortly after VoG, leaving just the management with their heads up their ars, the rest is history.

I loved vog and its a shame we will n3ver get anything like it again im 600 light in d2 coming from taken king d1 and my interest to do d2 raids is 0...

Exactly. I remember when the Vault first opened up and racing to complete it. I remember my first time Solo'ing Crota's End. I was so hyped for TTK and I loved the Oryx raid soo much. After I beat Last Wish, I was just left kinda like "Well now what?" I don't have that same desire to learn every aspect. I guess its functionally a fun and good raid, but it still just feels Off, sort of. It feels like in Leviathan and in LW, they were shooting for "Hard" rather than "Challenging, but fun and rewarding."

Destiny peaked too early. No raid will ever out do VoG.

I think the problem is they are focusing too much on puzzle mechanics which makes for a hard first time clear when no one knows what to do but things become significantly easier when you know what to do. Once again the Templar is a good example of a perfect balance. The mechanics are not at all hard to figure out and not too punishing if someone dies. Like think about explaining the Templar fight to someone who’s never done it versus explaining riven. It’s an easy to grasp mechanic but the fight going on around the mechanics is what makes it challenging.

I think the difference for me was, it was fun and rewarding to learn Vault of Glass. It wasn't as fun or rewarding to learn The Taken King, or The Last Wish. They feel fine as raids, functionally, but they are missing the spirit of it I guess.

I agree. They also focus too much on using different mechanics for every encounter, instead of exploring a smaller handful of mechanics in different ways. That was something VoG did very well. It always introduced you to its mechanics in a simple form first before making you deal with them in a more complex situation. VoG was less about solving puzzles through trial and error, and more about applying familiar challenges in gradually more complex and challenging situations.

That’s soo true once the oracle showed up you dealt with them for the rest of the raid. But because their introduction explained them well you knew how to manage them.

Oh, for sure! And it was like that all throughout the raid. To even get in you had to defend multiple sync plates, which was a more complex execution of a mechanic used in the story. Then you defended multiple confluxes while dealing with the marked for negation/ritual of negation - again, a more complex version of a mechanic used in a public event. Going to the center for cleansing also subtly indicated that the center was important. Then they show you where the oracles spawn before the next encounter begins, and you deal with them one at a time first before having to deal with them all at once. Then the Templar fight teaches you how the relic works. The next fight got you familiar with the map you’d be fighting Atheon on, and taught you how to open the portals (which was with sync plates once again), and where to find the relic in each portal. Finally, the Atheon fight combined sync plates, relics, and oracles.
