You are now part of the Reaper’s Game.

Spoiler Warning: This post will contain minor spoilers to The World Ends With You. Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from.. Shibuya? But.. Yayaka and I completed the Game, why am I back here..? *Hiiiiiiiiii~ “Welcome to Expert Mode. Get out of Shibuya. You have 24 hours. Fail and face erasure. -The Reapers” But.. I don’t have a partner! Cocoa: “Omg, like, literally, calm down. I’ll, like, totez be your partner, lol! Team Aifos ftw!” (What kind of hell is this..?) One day, you’re walking down the street, when you see a man being chased by the cops. He grabs you, and takes you hostage. The situation takes a turn from bad to worse, and you end up dying. Fun. Yet, to your surprise, you wake up in [current residential area] where you learn you’re participating in some sort of twisted “Reaper’s Game”, for a second chance at life, and you’re told you need to find a partner. Lucky for you,  is playing, too, and you buddy up! The Rules; You have to complete 7 challenges, one a day, most if not all of which, will involve fighting monstrous creatures called Noise. They are all timed, and oft involve solving riddles. You get 1 of the following;
A Pyrokinesis pin, letting you create flames upon the ground. A Thunderbolt pin, allowing you to strike baddies with lightning. A Shockwave pin, letting you wield an ethereal sword. An Energy Rounds pin, letting you shoot small energy projectiles. Or a Telekinesis Pin, giving you limited telekinesis.
And you get a partner, one video game character of your choice. However, there are two limitations;
1. In order to participate in The Game, they had to sacrifice whatever’s most precious to them. If what they value most is the source of their strength, then they’ll not have it, so keep that in mind. 2. The final challenge will be fighting the Game Master, who will be able to beat your partner in a 1v1, so if you choose someone so strong your help wouldn’t change much, you lose. Of course, you’ll probably lose if you choose someone too weak, too.
And, finally, if either you ir your partner dies, the other follows, no exceptions. So, general populace of the gaming subforum, who’re you going to fighting alongside, and what power would you choose? My answer;
At first, I was thinking to try and aim for the upper end of the power spectrum, that’s still within a power range I could assist. But then I thought, I am not trained for combat. It’d be much more practical to choose someone with support, and/or healing abilities, but one that could also still fight. As I thought about good healers, I had an epiphany! Steven Universe! Why, you might be asking? Well, firstly, Steven’s powers are all very defensive, evasive, and/or healing based, and with both defense & healing powers, survivability goes up. However, even more importantly, Steven has the ability to fuse; enhancing the powers of both fusees, while uniting them within one body. This is important, because unlike me, Steven has combat experience, and a fusion has skills of both fusees, so my lack thereof wouldn’t drag us down too much if we were fused into a single being. That, combined with healing, I think gives us a pretty good chance of survival. And of course, the power I’d go with is Shockwave, because Steven is trained with a sword.
But that’s all for now, folks! Jambuhbye! Edit; I change my answer;
As I thought about it, there’s a lot of risks with fusion.. Do pins even work fused? Does that count as one of us dying? Who knows. So, new answer! I’ll take Emily Kaldwin for my partner, from Dishonored 2. Emily’s a skilled sword fighter. Not amazing, but pretty great. If we assume that every story path is a possibilty in canon, she’s also clever enough to solve the Jindosh lock, so that’ll help with any riddles we might get. Additionally, when she lost Corvo to Delilah, rather than mope about it, she toppled the entire coup, thus, losing whatever she loses as her entry fee would likely motivate rather than break her. But, here’s the kicker, her powers! Via Far Reach (a super strength stretchy hand), she could manipulate the Noises’ positions into more advantagous layouts, with Mesmerize, she could distract our foes, Domino could let us link them all together, and Shadow Walk could let us get some cheap shots in. Plus, being all sneaksy, she’s very observant, and when I end up almost getting eaten by a shark, she’ll be able to pull me to safety with Far Reach. As for my pin? Pyrokinesis. It’s not the strongest one, but if there’s one thing it’s great at, it’s hitting multiple Noise at once. While also utilizing Emily’s crowd control to accentuate this effect, we would be able to effectively take out large groups of Noise fairly easily. Sadly, this setup is vulnerable to singular powerful Noise, but I think we’d still be good.
Spoiler warning; the conversation with King Crimson contains heavy spoilers for TWEWY.

  • As an interesting thought, I wonder what might happen if.. Well, spoilers for Hollow Knight!
So, in Hollow Knight there are a race of being called Vessels. You’re probably familiar with how they look, after all, the main character’s one. We know of 4 confirmed vessels in total; Ghost (the protagonist), the corpse of one found in Greenpath holding the Moth Cloak, the Broken Vessel; an infected boss found in the Ancient Basin, and the titular Hollow Knight; one of the two possible final bosses. And possibly Zote the Mighty, a knight of great renown. While all of these Vessels are implied to be imperfect, a perfect Vessel would be completely empty inside, for without a mind to think, or will to break, they could seal Radiance away within themselves.. But this would also imply that they have nothing they cherish. Nothing they love, or care for. If one without anything they cherish were to enter the Game, what would be their entry fee? How do you take what matters most from someone who doesn’t have anything that matters? A free pass? Something insignificant and arbitrary? Maybe they just can’t even enter? Hm..
• I choose a Telekenisis pin. Depending on the limit and/or power. Quite useful if I'm able to keep the enemies from moving, hurl them away and aid my partner from a range. Quite an underrated ability. As for my partner, I'd go with my boi Solair of Astora. He can apply buffs that will enhance my telekenisis pin even further. He can heal me if I'm hurt and throw lighting spears at our enemies. He's melee prowess, and he'll do anything to protect me. The most important thing of all, engage in jolly cooperation with him is enough. As for the most precious thing for Solair. I'd say it's his obsession over the Sun. Quite unsure how that will weaken him.

        • Energy pin, because i like the Dragon Ball series, and shooting energy is a dream come true. Batman is my partner, he's already lost what's most important to him. If not Bats then the OG Doomguy, he became even stronger once he lost the thing he cared for most.

          • I'd probably run with thunderbolt. I know a lot about electricity so I just feel I'd have the highest potential with that. As for who I'd be grouping up with, probably Castlevania's Alucard. Centuries of knowledge, a fairly powerful list of spells, and in all honesty, I think the only thing he values is his sword maybe? He isn't fond of his vampirism, that much is for sure but it is the source of a lot of his strength and abilities.

            • Another case of food for thought that could turn into a character selection: living weapons. Two examples we can both think of are Parasoul’s umbrella Krieg and Cerebella’s Vice Versa. Neither would be the character’s entry fees, but would the weapons count as players in terms of the partner/pact system or would the composer focus more on the fact they’re weapons?

              • Vhek because he has knowledge of CHIM but the most precious thing to him is the Heart of Lorkhan (which he gave up to save himself from such heart). To follow Vhek into the battle would be and honor and to keep up with him I chose the shockwave pin as Vhek would be using his spear Muatra (also called Molag Bal's stick) to kill the enemy. If he dies then I'll have easy access to CHIM as the mortal with the most knowledge n the subject would be fighting alongside me without his god powers (meaning he would give out the secrets of CHIM and AMARANTH to his companions) when face the GM I can try to CHIM and if I fail then I wouldn't exist in the first place.

                • What any superpowered character would lose that they value most is always going to be what gives them super powers. So you cant really choose a super powered ally as they will be stripped of what makes them super. I would choose something that requires a host such as Venom. His most precious thing would be his host as he cannot survive without them. I would become the new host. And we would have the telekinesis ring. Mostly for defensive purposes. The rule states my choice cannot win alone and as just a symbiote without a host Venom can't win on his own so problem solved.

                      • Shockwave pin no doubt, because I love swords. As for my companion... Can't think of anyone better than the Arfa-sys for this. The Arfa-sys is a completely customisable AI companion you get at the start of SAO: Fatal Bullet. She can use all the same gear and skills the play character can, (except for the UFG, or the Ultimate Fibers Gun, basically a grappling hook) additionally you can decide it's stats (along with skills and gear). Personally I have her set up with very supportive skills that either buff allies, debuff enemies, or heal. Her 2 weapons are dual pistols and dual assault rifles, because everything is better when it's dual wielded, both of the weapons are basically something I used to use but no longer do because I found better gear, and it's not like she's exactly a DPS machine even you build her specifically for that, in fact none of the companions deal relevant damage, but for the sake of this little game we'll say she does just fine. Fatal Bullet already lets you use swords, so I could switch out some of her gadgets and make room for the melee booster kit 2, which I would borrow to raise my melee atk power (at the cost of bullet circle accuracy, which obviously means nothing when I don't have a gun). She'd be very effective at keeping the both of us up and running during this, and I imagine our final boss wouldn't be much harder to take down than a random (NPC) player you can come accross on the field (I assume this because without the players help your party pretty much always loses player skirmishes, at least past level 30 or so, which is pretty low, and my (thus also everyone else's, including Arfa-sys) level is ~120). Now if only I could use sword skills...

                        • I'll take the shockwave pin as my weapon, partner is Azura. Capable fighter with a staff, but more importantly she's an excellent second line support, which means In combat I can stay up front while she keeps me from exhausting myself Either her, or the apothecary from Dawn of War II, wait, actually I'll pass on the apothecary, the medicine he carries is designed for use on space marines, it would probably just kill me

                            • I think I need a break from the transistor discussion. I’m gonna submit the simplest character I can think of: Lycus Dion. All he cares about is the following: 1. Fighting/Killing 2. His rock music 3. Drinking 4. Sex The reapers could probably take away the drinking, but I doubt that’ll really matter. They can’t really take the fighting, so they’ll probably take away his rock music. There’s hell to be paid for those who takes his music from him. With a shotgun, a shield that’s to some degree magical, a history of violence that could be older than my nation, a very solid punch, and I guess aleph too, he’d be great for fighting noise. With the energy rounds, thunderbolt, or pyrokinesis pin I could either provide ranged support or crowd control. That bring said I’d have to deal with two things: 1. The fact that Lycus is a major asshole 2. The fact that Lycus is not that bright.

As for my partner, hmm. <"Bopsheezi this is an obvious choice."> No Omega, it's not an obvious choice. You're straight up just too powerful. I think I got one. Ness, from EarthBound/Mother 2. Why Ness? Well he has psychic powers, so he can hold his own. But he's also just a normal kid, so he's not too powerful. <"Are you really going to endanger a child?"> I can't think of anyone better.

                                  • Huh, nobody replied to this one yet. Guess I’ll start. I have a couple ideas rolling around, but I’ll start with my primary idea: Isaac Clarke as my ally and Energy Rounds as my Pin. Isaac isn’t the strongest of fighters, but he’s got the will to resist beings far greater, good aim, an engineering degree, and most importantly, a degree of creativity. Assuming the Pin is a shared weapon, Energy Rounds is probably not too far from what he’s been working with the most, and what I have more experience with as well. The one factor I can’t account completely for is who the GM will be and what Isaac would have to give up. A lover? A world? His sanity? A state of peace?

                                    • Okay, this one’s more of a “what if?” Discussion. Red and Squigly. Both are singers that have lost something due to a mob but gained a means to fight because of it. Both those means of fighting seem to be very close to them. Do you think they’d lose their powers due to the entry fees or would they lose something else?
