The ancient Greeks seemed to be pretty ahead of their time. They gave us democracy, mathematics (Pythagoras, Euclid, Archimedes), ethics and philosophy (Socrates, Aristotle, Plato), literature (Homer, Sophocles), medicine (Hippocrates), architecture, art, science etc. etc. Also their made up gods were much more entertaining than the Christian made up god. If I could go back to any pre-Christian culture it would probably be Ancient Greece.

Who cares if it's entertaining I care if it is true
Who cares if it's entertaining I care if it is true
If you care if it’s true why believe in any religion at all?
-
I believe and know Christianity is true
-
I know you believe it. But how do you know it?
-
Know that it is true?
-
Yes. You said you know that Christianity is true. How do you know it’s true?

This is a debate neither side can win. It’s like trying to describe the taste of salt to someone who’s never tasted it. Or describing a color to someone who’s never seen it. It cannot be proven or disproven on a grand scale. It’s a personal thing.
-
A “personal thing” - in other words “faith”? There’s no actual evidence or rational reason that can demonstrate it’s truth?
-
I know it’s true, but nothing I’m going to say is going to change your mind, and nothing you’re going to say is going to change mine. Agreed?
-
Not necessarily. I’m open minded to anything. If you can provide me with a rational reason to believe I will. I don’t even need physical evidence. Just a logical argument for the reason you “know” it’s true. I’m quite happy for you to say “I believe it’s true” or “I have faith it’s true”. But you said you “know” it’s true. That’s a knowledge claim - a claim to knowledge of the actual objective truth. Knowledge claims (unlike belief claims) need to be supported by some sort of evidence. Whether that’s physical evidence or logical/philosophical evidence. For example I don’t claim to “know” god doesn’t exist. Because that claim requires evidence I don’t have.
-
It’s a knowledge one can obtain for themselves, it requires work. I don’t know how to explain it. Prayer is an abstract concept for lots of people. Just pray about it, and then sit and listen. See what happens.

Editado por Uncanny_Vale: 10/25/2018 11:15:39 AMI guess we have a fundamental difference of opinion about the difference between belief and knowledge. I suppose it’s natural for anyone to think their strongly held belief is the objective truth - otherwise they wouldn’t believe it. I have no doubt the ancient Greeks claimed to “know” a literal Zeus lived on mount Olympus raining down thunderbolts. They would claim they “knew” in their hearts this belief was true. That’s not knowledge however - that’s faith. Then again, without being inside your head, I can’t “know” for certain your belief is false. Maybe, unlike the billions of other people that have believed false things, your belief really is special and unique. But you’re right I don’t think we’re going to convince each other. Myself personally, knowing the tricks the human mind can play on itself, I’m way too skeptical to trust in faith. I’m going to need some convincing, rational arguments before I believe in magical beings.

I appreciate you respecting my opinion, it’s a breath of fresh air to have someone not try and rip apart my opinion.

Also, their gods made sense. Their gods were very much like humans, so it made sense why humanity was the way it was
