The Toxicity of Our City

I've been noticing a lot of toxic behavior in the community (big shocker) but especially when it comes to people who ask for nerfs/buffs. I'm well aware that a lot of unfortunate changes have been attributed to "[insert player demographic here] crying about [insert issue here]", but I feel like we could reach a broader consensus and/or understanding with a little more conversation and a little less shaming. Too often I see things like "Just get better and stop crying" or "It's people like you crying about ________ that made ________ happen." Rather than explaining why a nerf/buff might be bad in the grand scheme of things or offering a better solution, people seem fit to just shame others for their opinions on how the game should play. Obviously Bungie can't listen to each and every person who complains, nor should they. I also don't expect the entire community to always agree on everything, and that isn't bad. I personally believe, as a fellow player and long time fan, we could be a little more understanding and a little less hostile. Even if you have nothing constructive to add, sometimes just not saying anything would be better. I don't expect the toxic people to be less toxic, but I hope this at least causes some people to take a step back at some point in the future.

Let me tell you a story of a riven run... I really really needed that 1000 voices. So I went to lfg it up. Everything went ok, and we completed it. Everyone was chill, and helpful, even knowing that I haven't had a completion yet. Sadly my drop didnt happen. Fast forward another week. Got into another riven run with lfg. This time though, people were pointing fingers, and well being the well warlock, everyone was pointing at me. I told them I only had one completion, and I still make mistakes. They were also making mistakes, and yet insisted on me showing my emblem with a single completion. Nobody was working together, everyone was arguing. I was quiet, so I guess that made me the target of hate. Anyways to make the long story short. I got booted from that team. So I took a break, crushed. After about an hour I went into the grind to find a fireteam. This time I found a group, they were all very young. We were able to work together being optimistic, and encouraging. After a few mistakes we completed it, easily. Guess what. I got the drop, only after 2 completions. Karma is real, my friends. KEEP BEING HELPFUL, AND KIND TO EACHOTHER! Encourage eachother to do better, don't put them down for making mistakes. That is all...

      • The issue for me is that Bungie put all this work into a game that has a split focus, in which both sides feel half baked. The single player is okay. But it doesn't hold a candle to a really good single player game. The crucible feels tacked on. And because of that, you have great unbalance and a lack of understanding because it just doesn't feel good. So, instead of having one great game, you have a solid game with a pvp anchor. Bungie did it to themselves, and they'll just have to deal with it.

        • The only thing bungie needs to work on is their servers, before nerfs or buffs. How do you know a weapon is bad or good if you or someone else was lagging? If this game actually ran smoothly we'd be able to see how good or bad the weapons truly are. And lag in this game is damn near constant.

        • While i agree with your personal advice on being more understanding and civil when talking to one another, i am going full hypocrit when i point the finger at bungo. A little side note before my rant, bungie has made tremendous strides with the game since the last dlc. I went full anti bungo to sorta back on their side. And with that....que rant. A triple a title and their developers have no excuse when it comes to the type of shoty balancing acts i have seen from bungie. The forums, while extremely toxic, are just another statistic for bungie to analyze when looking at what guns to buff or nerd. If they see a ton of data showing a gun absolutely demolishing players, their QA testing finds the same thing and a lot of people on the forums are crying wolf... well then you moght have a problem. But of one little pants shitter calls for nerf because his mida wont kill shotguns at close range... you can call that litttle guy an outlier. Once bungo quells the storm with majority of the nerf herders by slightly tweeking guns and making things more balanced, then i bet you would see a massive decrease in the amount of nerf posts you will see. Or maybe not.

            • You got the foundation wrong: Bungie doesn’t care. The forums are a means to concentrate the complaints in a private area, so that player dissatisfaction can be replaced with pitiful arguments such as: success of Fortnite, players too demanding, and the like BS. When the truth is, they suck!

                • Every game forum is full of toxicity. Go look at Overwatch or Siege forums just to name two. Full of nothing but Nerf-herding, Dev Bashing, Rank Shaming, Character Shaming, etc. Everything they can do to let everybody know how much better they are than everyone else at the collection of lights and sounds in front of them.

                  • Well toxic behavior is fueled by a game’s that allow so much trash players. You can’t call someone a asshole, but it is hard to get a player banned that is obviously cheating. You want to blame the community for the values and behavior Bungie promotes.

                    • Your title reminded me of System of the Down... Its easy to spot good feedback but sifting through it all to find it takes so much time. There isn’t enough people who can see the intentions behind the developer’s systems, play the game objectively without attachment, and then give a solution on a middle ground, so the middle ground is never found. Being an actual responsible member of a community would be refreshing to see, but people tend to get attached to personal preferences and desires. Even Reddit it’s a bit of a circus. Is there a better way?

                          • Honestly, the only toxic people in the community are typically on these boards. And the number of people on these boards represent a small fraction of that community. I honestly don’t think Bungie nerf/buff things due to player outcry. They nerf/buff things based on game data. So just because we see a bunch of people crying for it here, I doubt it has much to do with their decisions. Bungie can easily look at the metrics of their game and see what’s actually going on and I believe that is how they decide to do what they do. I think some player feedback is taken into consideration and they can’t always know how something is going to preform until millions of people play it, but there is a much more complex strategy that goes into it then just a handful of people complaining. So yes, insulting each other on these boards is pretty silly because none of us have much to do with how the company decides to do things.

                          • Actually ppl who cry nerf...never have evidence that suggest a nerf is needed. Most of the time it is lack of player skill/understanding. If the player who posts about the nerf did it in a more reasonable fashison people would respond correspondingly. I think the more fleshed out reasons for nerfs are in reddit forum tho.
