There are 4 tiers of powerful rewards in Destiny 2 now.
Tier 1 is all daily challenges, Flashpoint, Weekly stuff like Crucible, Gambit, Strikes, Heroic Missions, Hawthorne & Ikora.
^^^^ All of these will drop +5 powerful rewards till you hit 520 light, then after it'll be 1-3+ from your OVERALL light. For ex: My light is 530, my helmet is 533, I just completed Ikora weekly, but the reward system just handed me a 532. Its consider a powerful drop but not what I needed.
Tier 2 is Nightfall and the weekly bounty from Spider until you hit 540. Once your beyond 540 Tier 2 will become Tier 1.
Tier 3 is Petra rewards, Blind well Heroic until 560 light. Same as before, once you hit 560 all of these rewards will only give you 1-3 above your overall light.
Edit- The first 2 Encounters in the Last wish
Tier 4 are the stuff that boost you greatly to 600
Prime Engrams are your best friend, The Dungeon( only appears on week 3), tier 4 Blind well(Heroic), & the Last wish(Encounters 3-Riven Heart.
I have a friend who is in the 520s but only plays a couple hrs a week, he don't have time to do all the powerful rewards, I suggest he do only Petra weekly stuff since it can be knocked out in about 1hr and gives him a big boost in light. He & I both know he might not hit 600 by the end of this season, but that's what I recommend.
Another ex: say all your gear is 540ish, I recommend go straight into Petra stuff and the raid to get a big boost in rewards, then do all your Tier 1 stuff so your other gear can catch up.
I hope this helps.

And because all powerful drops have a chance to be exotic it technically makes completing all the powerful gear sources worth attempting each week if you have the time to do so.
