A new player's thoughts, for new (and veteran) players.

I've been playing D2 for about 2 months, so I think that I'm now in a position to offer some feedback, having experienced everything D2 has to offer before Forsaken releases. Destiny 2 is a pretty great game, overall. No regrets. The majority of D2 players are good people who enjoy the game and want to help improve it. D1 and D2 both have strengths and weaknesses. Very few games are a 10/10, but this one ain't bad. The campaign isn't too demanding, and a lot of times you're going to get help from random guardians who just happen to be in the right place at the right time. You can solo, but it's more rewarding to make friends and team up. I wasn't having much success in the crucible at first, most don't. Don't feel bad. I'm still not very good, but that's ok. But I wanted to get better. Somehow I managed to actually do pretty well in my first Iron Banner event, finishing 1st or 2nd more often than not (whatever matchmaking mechanic they were using for it definitely worked in my favor - and I had finally gotten the Vigilance Wing, so that helped a lot). Don't give up. Keep trying. Crucible has a steep learning curve and there's a lot of ways to experience it. Don't worry too much about the level of competitiveness, there's only 2 possible outcomes; win or lose. Learn from every match and don't compare yourself to other players. Find what works for you and be the best at it that you can. Don't complain when you get wrecked. No one starts off as a one man (or woman, etc) army, and those who became one didn't do it in a day or a week. Set a personal goal, contribute as best you can. And when all else fails, just follow the best player on your team and try to support them - they might not need your help, but 2 or 3 guns are better than 1, and you can see a lot of different play styles first hand. (a "newbie" crucible mode for training, which doesn't contribute to stats or offer rewards would probably save a lot of headaches for players who want to learn the ropes while not dragging a strong competitive team down, and increasing rewards in competitive would really make a huge difference and even playing field while keeping new players out of the most demanding multiplayer mode) Yes, you will get crushed by the elite streamers who are just there to farm kills for their feeds, but that really only represents a small minority of players. I started reading the forums and articles about how to get better at PvP, and I was really shocked at how much toxicity, elitism, hate and anger there was from players. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of players that don't take the game so seriously, make positive contributions, help others and seem to be here to have fun. But if the community wants to grow, it really needs to tone down the negativity and make the game more welcoming and inviting. This is the kind of game that can get substantially better, or worse, when players voice their opinions. If there's something you don't like, it's ok to start a discussion, but do it in the most positive way you can. We want more players, a bigger community, more accessibility. Think about what you're posting before hand. Read it over before you submit, ask yourself if this article is going to help or hurt your fellow players, and don't feed the trolls. I want more loot. You want more loot. We all want more loot!! But I wanted the loot I couldn't get on my own as a casual/solo player. So I took a gamble and joined a clan. Best decision I've made since I started playing. A word of advice; don't just join any clan. Find one that suits your play style and your life style. I lucked out and got into a clan with people who are helpful, easy going, don't pressure or demand stats/level/gear requirements, and who have fun. A lot of the guys I've played with lately are dads, just like me, who have lives and responsibilities and understand that family comes first. There's a clan for everyone. You don't need to solo, and you don't need to settle. It's dangerous to go alone! Raids and other challenges you need a team for are really rewarding, if you have the right team. Take the time to find one. If it doesn't mesh with you, find a new clan. There are lots out there. Destiny players are passionate. Most seem to sincerely love the game and want to see it grow and improve. Don't buy into the toxic shenanigans some bring to the game, though. Some people will just never be happy no matter what. And that's ok. D2 brings a lot to the table, and not everyone is going to like the changes, nerfs, game modes, etc. It's going to happen. Relax and roll with the punches. The game is constantly evolving. The developers and programmers are people too, and yes Bungie wants our money (profit isn't a dirty word, folks) but they also want more players and a happy community that looks forward to jumping into the world they created. They've made good and bad choices for the community over the years (I won't bring up the D1 timeline here) but don't give them hell every time something changes. Share your opinions, give your feedback, but stop attacking people from behind your keyboard. A community is responsible for it's own culture, and this doesn't need to be a toxic one. Finally, have fun or don't play. Choosing to do something you don't like is a self-imposed torture. Doing something you love is rewarding. If you hate the game, put it down, uninstall it, move on to something else. If you enjoy the game, get connected with other like-minded players, contribute to the community as best you can. Make new players feel welcome. Destiny has an opportunity at a fresh start in less than 24 hours. That means new players, new friends, and more loot! At the risk of sounding sentimental toward the only character in the game I actually liked ( excluding Failsafe :D ), "Forget winning. Shoot for the stars, Guardian. Or just shoot. A lot. The winning will come.” This is especially true for new players. I hope this helps any new players just jumping in. All feedback is welcome, but keep it civil. These are just my opinions, and it's cool if you don't share em. You don't need to.

  • I don’t advocate use of the Meta but if a new player comes around and isn’t doing great in crucible then use it cause it’s gonna help you get good.

    • Well done great post. Crucible success varies widely depending on your definition of success. Keep playing, find your style, and most importantly, find a team. 2 or 3 other guardians who you can work well with in crucible. Trust me it goes a long way.

Day 1 destiny 1 veteran here, game is TRASH. Want to know why? It removed all the progress from the 2nd game and shit out regurgitated alpha content that already had improvement on it, but now... what’s this now. Good for you? Maybe... for veterans? Helll no. And my one question for you is... private matches?

      • Sadly these forums have taken a turn for the worse. I would kinda hope bungie wipes em and starts fresh. I started enjoying d2 again when the whisper quest dropped I’ve had a blast running it helping people get their whisper . Those moments for me make d2 special and I’m really hoping forsaken brings more of those back. The solstice grind didnt interest me at all. Didn’t even go past green . But forsaken has my interest it hasn’t been purchased yet and I have that wait and see attitude at the moment . If it’s anything like what we’ve seen this past month I think bungie is back on track . Glad your enjoying the game

        • Vanilla D2 was fun..... for about a month or two. After that is when the real issues with game management became apparent. Forsaken will be the exact same way which is why I decided to forego buying Forsaken. If Bungie has truly decided to turn the franchise around I will buy Forsaken for 50% off around Black Friday. If it is still a steaming pile of "meh" then I saved $70+ to spend on a game from a better developer. Win-Win.

          • You see, Destiny 2 was a step down for us veterans. I loved Destiny 1 way too much lol. I couldn’t get enough of it. Yet vanilla Destiny was somewhat bland. That was until TTK. Now we expected that same level of excitement form a sequel, only to be let down. For now, I’m takin a break from D2.

Two whole months! To be honest, my opinion of D2 would be completely different if I didn't slog thru those other 300 days of no progression, no loot, no continuing story... Infact, I'm sure I wouldn't have minded nearly as much as they slowly reverted back to Destiny One... and in piecemeal fashion gave me back everything they originally took away. I envy you.

                • LOL. Two months is all I could stomach of this game at a time. I quit initially after two months. Came back for the major updates to see if they fixed it. I left disappointed every single time.
Destiny 2 is a pretty great game, overall. No regrets. The majority of D2 players are good people who enjoy the game and want to help improve it.
If it's a "great" game, then why does it need improvement?
D1 and D2 both have strengths and weaknesses. Very few games are a 10/10, but this one ain't bad.
Please tell me one single thing that D2 does better than D1? The story? That's not saying much. Ain't bad? D1 was one of my favorite games of all time. I was expecting progression, innovation, improvement. What we got was a gutted downgrade that gave me less choices, less power, ugly armor, weak gear, and re-skins galore.

                  • False. Random players will NOT join you during the campaign (except possibly only the very 1st mission. Also, this pathetic, shameless cash-grab is far from being 10/10.

                  • You’ve learned a lot, and your attitude will take you far in this game. Two things: 1. Clans are often volatile and cliquish. You may need to change clans repeatedly to find one that is a good fit. Clans die. Don’t hang onto a dead one. 2. This forum is not The Community. Especially in pvp. All you’re going to hear from here is Whatever angry minority feels aggrieved and victimized at the time. Right now it’s pvp players pissing and moaning about the sandbox changes, and pve players wailing about how OP Sleeper is in Gambit.

                      • This is just my opinion but I'd suggest new players to the Destiny universe should try D1. It's still the superior game, especially among the day 1 brigade. The franchise moved backwards with D2. CoO was an embarrassment and the low point in Destinys history.

                        • Nice to see some balanced thinking on these forums and I'm glad you're enjoying it. The main problem for most (myself included) is that the 3 years we invested in the first game seems to count for little. Suggestions on these forums from veteran players were ignored and things that weren't broken in the first place got 'fixed'. For worse. Now don't get me wrong: I liked the concept of the Tower being destroyed and being forced to strive for new gear. It was brilliantly executed but I was a little disappointed that the enemy responsible was a reskin of a D1 enemy, but... OK. Would have been better to face something new, but still... What I have a problem with is being sold back gear and missions that I have already paid for, or content which was obviously dropped from the original (Curse of Osiris, anyone?); Exotics that I had repeatedly sharded in D1 decoding in the first week of the 'new' game; rejigging the Dust Palace strike with the Psion Flayers from D1 as a 'story' mission in Warmind, etc. And Wtf is with the expansion strikes being harder versions of the campaign missions that now require matchmaking? I haven't ordered Forsaken yet. I loved Gambit; there's a lot of good-looking stuff here, but with every clip and trailer I watch I'm seeing more armour and weapons from House of Wolves. Which I bought 3 years ago. I can't get any of my old friends to return, for the reasons I've just stated. I returned to D2 again about a month ago because the year 1 Season pass was only £17, the price of one expansion. Certainly got my money's worth at that price (still haven't found all the memory fragments; got the Polaris Lance catalyst to finish; 6 more Lighthouse weapons to get, etc). I will probably do the same with Forsaken. But this fence I'm sitting on is getting seriously painful!

I get what your saying, but going solo is how I got better at this game! In PvE and Crucible both. I use to solo nightfalls legit no cheeses in D1 all the time. Even solo’d the Crota raid once, got to Crota by myself a bunch of times, but only defeated him once. When going solo you have no one but yourself to blame for dying. Clans and fireteams do have their merits and I have fun playing with them. But, there’s nothing in this game more satisfying than Victory by yourself in an activity that’s supposed to require a team to win!!

                          • Was a new player myself and played from mid May to the end of July. Popped in to try Gambit. Experience was meh. My take on Destiny is that it is a game I wouldn't recommend to my friends. Most stuff and gameplay is just recycled missions, gear and weapons. How many times can you play the same story over and over in heroic stories strikes, advance d strikes and Nightfall? Or get get 3 automatics that look identical except for different names, different colors and some stat differences. Just to get a higher power number for your character, which seems to make little difference s lot of the time. PvP is a joke with ancient p2p setup. Plus weapons are shared between PvE and PvP so PvP nerfs constantly affect PvE. In fact this game lost so many players, I bought it for $12 new with it being only 9 months old. Even the Division with it's own set of problems for losing its player base was going for $25 new and it was over a year old. While it's nice you are enjoying it, not sure what future this game has with Activision contract running out in 2020 and Bungie getting $100m from a Chinese outfit to start develop other games. Enjoy your time!

Its not all that often that people take the time to post how much they are enjoying the game because.....well they are busy playing! But when there is something on the more positive side to take a look at it's a nice change. The game seems to be on the right track now, looking at all the available information currently. Like I said - looking forward to going on a new adventure and doing Cayde proud.
