So...as everybody has no doubt already expounded upon, Destiny 2 is about as truly enjoyable as a root canal with no novovaine. Actually, that's a lie. A root canal is fixing something. This...not so much.
To start with...the almighty cluster-blam!- that is exotics.
In Destiny 1, we could modify the basic stats within reason. Impact, range, stability, etc etc ad infinitum. Now though...we have no options. Heck, legendaries make overall better weapons since we can change the stats. Now...to me, exotics should be a little bit more mutable. Call me crazy.
There is also the frequency of them dropping. Three from the campaign itself. Armor from Titan, Weapon from...Io I believe and an Engram from completing. The drop rate from doing public events is...way, WAY too high. Same for legendary engrams. These are items that are the pinnacle of craftsmanship...and I seem to get them about as often as Power Ammo.
Second is the campaign. The Red Legion, led by the greatest commander of the Cabal Empire...sits around dropping injection rigs, mining rigs and such? These are the space-rhinos who blow up planets for getting in their way, detonates stars as an end-game...and they just sit fat and stupid? The Red Legion with their amazing record does nothing? I'm sorry but that just strains credulity.
I also don't really connect with any of the characters. Zavaka, Ikora, Cayde, Mordeca...I mean Hawthorne...I don't feel invested in any of these characters. They could get a bullet and I would just shrug and keep playing. They don't MEAN anything.
In Destiny 1, they at least had Variks. He was fun.
Well, beyond what I have already strained in giving this game the benefit of the doubt.
Problem 3 are the Class Trees. They are so...limited! So boring and restrictive. We can choose our grenade, great. Jump, great. Even the rift/ dodge/ shield type. Love it. But only four options for our class beyond that? Guardians who have laid low Atheon, Crota, Oryx, Aksis? I'm sorry but that just screams laziness on the design team.
There aren't even any real support specs now. In Destiny 1 we had Sunsinger who could save the entire Nightfall if everyone died. Pop back up and shazam! Or the Defender who could drop a huge useful bubble as a default. I hid in these way too much to call myself a proper Warlock but...And the Nightstalker...that was fun. Even without the damage from it, I could spam it like mad on the Dreadnaught during an enemy attack run. It was so useful! Here...a shadow of its former viability.
Support specs allowed for a lot more craziness to go down. Now it's...blegh.
Problem four are the strikes. I get more invested in flossing my teeth - ooooh, bit of burger - than I do in these Strikes. They are monotonous, boring, unchanging. In Destiny 1 towards the end, we had variety! Would we be facing Taken during the Archon Priest or Vex? Sure it wasn't always wonderful - bloody Axion Bolt Centurions during Nightfall and Voidburn! - but it provided challenge.
Ultimately, that is what Destiny 2 has sacrificed. Difficulty and challenge.
Truth be told, Dragons Dogma is way older and is still a LOT more engaging, mechanic-wise and story-wise. And that was last gen XBOX. I find myself after but a week or two returning to Dark Souls 3 more than Destiny 2. Hell, I'm going into Crucible just to have a little bit of fun. And I hate the Crucible!
BTW, Skyburner's Oath mows through Guardians like Jimmy Saville through an orphanage. Or Madonna. Both are accurate but for VERY different reasons.
So, to sum up this post...in three years, Hitler castrated the league of nations, occupied Poland and was doing horrific things.
In the same time frame, Bungie has effectively destroyed the Destiny franchise...and are doing horrific things to it.
BUNGIE...Hitler...both have six letters.
Coincidence?
