This is honestly depressing. Any criticism for things like this is just written off as "sexist privileged males harassing women" instead of taking it seriously. News like this has really saddened me in recent months
Maybe there is a pay gap in Australia. I don't know. But what makes me sad is the owners claim it's similar in the US
Regardless this behavior should be illegal

Its voluntary though. They ask if you'll pay it, you say "no", you get your coffee anyway. *shrug*

1 RespuestaSince it's australia i don't really care. However in the U.S. this would be 100% illegal discrimination and that cafe would of been severely fined.

6 RespuestasEditado por Flee: 8/12/2017 2:55:54 PMThe US pay gap is not a myth though. It's a fact, even though earnings gap is a more accurate term. The issue lies with attributing (most of) it to institutionalized sexism.

Editado por wowchild18: 8/12/2017 12:05:37 PMFake outrage. GG OP. It's completely voluntary and they donate what they make to charity,
However co-owner Alex O’Brien told Seven News the surcharge, which is in place one week out of every month, wasn’t compulsory. She also said none had so far refused to pay it and in a Facebook post overnight said the idea has been well supported overall.
http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/restaurants-bars/handsome-her-cafe-in-brunswick-melbourne-charges-men-18-gender-gap-surcharge/news-story/81fc5074b7e9be8aa05240f157774e31

2 RespuestasThey're a private company, they can feel free to charge what they want and feel the economic consequences. Such as no men turning up and buying their food.

4 RespuestasEditado por MildSquirrel: 8/12/2017 4:49:58 AMThe tax is going off the government published report that shows a wage gap. This is Australian politics, don't apply yank speak to it. Australia is also right leaning so if the government that won't allow gays to marry, has notoriously strict boarder laws and Tony Abbott says there's a wage gap I'm gonna believe it.

It's Australia who really cares what they do
