This is why EU is failing. The US is a single market because it is a single country. We may have our passionate political fights, but at the end of the day we're all Americans. As anyone who tries to -blam!- with us quickly finds out. The EU tried to force a Europe that is still a patchwork of independent countries with longstanding political and ethnic rivalries and resentments to act as a single body. You can't force economic and monetary unity when there aren't political and cultural unity to back them up. People will sacrifice for family in ways they won't for friends. They will sacrifice for friends in ways they won't for the annoying next door neighbor.

  • There is some truth to what you say. The Misbegotten EURO has the potential to destroy the EU, because the central bank of EU isn't constructed like the FED is.

  • The problem isn't the currency. The currency just represents the larger nationalistic problems at the heart of the EU. You still see yourselves as Germans, British, Spanish, Portuguese, etc... Whereas we see ourselves as Americans first..,then whatever region or tribe we belong to. So we will pull together and pull for one another in ways you won't. Because we have a shared identity that you don't have in reality...and treaties can't force the issue.

  • It's not so much the ideolgy that counts but the institutions and their constitutions. US people don't even have social security and healthcare at european levels. So we may have more open discord over here in europe, but our laws are very similar and so are our values.

Doesn't matter. Because it's not an ideology problem but an identity one. My brother and I have very different political values but we are still family. When you identified yourself you did so as a German, not a European. I always identify first as an American and only speak of what State I'm from when someone what's specifics of where I live. I don't see my state as some seperate tribe within my nation. You still do. Which is why --whenever there are problems within the EU---instead of solving them, you guys retreat to your nationalistic camps and throw rocks at each other. The U.K. may be the first to do this (never having really seen themselves as part of continental Europe) but all of you do it. Whereas we Americans do the opposite. We take out pound of flesh out of each other when things are going normally. But when things get tough we put those differences aside and remember we're all Americans.

  • That's not that big of a difference. Your last civil war wasn't that long ago. You are now one BIG nationalistic state instead of a dozen on the same area, but have also a much lower populations density. You are right that we are a miles away from the united nations of Europe, but so was Germany itself not that long ago. It was a nice experience to spend six weeks in the US in 2015. You people were much nicer than I expected! The town look a bit improvised and as if people were always on the move, but all in all it was very interesting. The drivers are also lovely people compared to German standards. Everybody here gets autistic the moment he drives a car, bike or whatever. I expected pure terror on US highways and was astonished how easy I got from A to B without major confrontations. wkr

  • You say the U.K we don't identify as that. We as a rule will usually identify as either English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh, some may say British but usually we go for the specific country. But the same as Americans we all pull together if the UK comes under attack. Very few people and absolutely nobody I know here would ever identify as European. The trouble with the E.U was that was not what we signed up for we had agreed to join a common market not this beast that became the EU
