The -blam!- are you talking about. I remember weekly heroics being not so hard alone and plus having friends does help doing them.That's more then enough for heavy where it's 1 coins for 5 synths and decent for items from xur that you actually need

I miss grinding for strange coins. Long story: Around mid vanilla destiny before TDB, Xür had arrived to the tower and was selling MIDA. Little ol' me was screaming like a little girl at the sight of it. I had remembered seeing the gun in concept art and pictures before destiny was released. Now the gun was here right before me. But...there was one problem..... ...I didn't have enough strange coins and I had already done my weekly heroic strike. So did i just sit there and cry? NO! Well maybe a little...., but i knew what i had to do, so I began grinding strikes. After hours and hours of complete grind, I returned to the cryptarch to decrypt my engrams. One by one the blue bastard decrypted them as he laughed in my face when they turned into useless gear. So back to work I got. I later came back with another batch and nervously decrypted them. Most turned into gear, a few into motes of light, but 2 of them turned into strange coins. At this point I had 11 strange coins, but that was still 12 strange coins short. "No worries. Tomorrow I'll get the rest." I told myself. Next day I sat in my couch eating doritos, drinking mountain dew, and occasionally getting up to go to the restroom like the pathetic basement virgin I was. Nonetheless, I continued my grind. As the hours passed, i soon began to get worried. It seemed like I would not have enough strange coins to buy MIDA before Xür left. I grew desperate. I started looking online to see if there were other ways to get strange coins, but all sources seemed to lead me to grinding strikes. I had no time to grind strikes, there was only 8 hours left and i was still 6 coins short. And then it hit me.... "I already have a level 29 hunter, i can just create another hunter, transfer my gear, do the weekly heroic strike with him, and then transfer the coins to my main hunter!", I said to myself as I began to lose my mind. So I got to work. There was no time to slack off; I had to get that hunter to level 20 ASAP! So started the first mission, watched the unskipable cuts cenes, and got to the tower. Once there, I transfered my main hunter's gear into this new, less worthy hunter, but it had to be done. Once at level 5, i continued the grind to level 20 by playing crucible and completing bounties. One by one I rose in levels until I was finally level 19. As the minutes passed I could feel the deadline creeping up on me. Xúr would be leaving in only an hour and a half. Each crucible match felt like it was giving me less xp than it should have, but maybe I was just losing it. After some time, I finally hit level 20! Without checking the time, I rushed to equip the gear and start up the heroic strike! I had no time to look for friends to help; I had to go at it alone. After what felt like hours, I reached Sepiks prime. That purple spiked bastard was gonna suffer as I destroyed him from under the platform. I slowly sniped him and occasionally shot a few rockets until BAM! He began his death animation and I quickly left to orbit. I rushed against time and began transferring my loot and gear into the vault. Time was running out! I quickly switched characters, but the god forsaken loading screens were taking longer than usual! Or were they? Maybe i was just imagining it. But nothing was gonna stop me now! Once at the tower, I immediately grabbed the strange coins and ran to the speaker's side of the tower. As the location loaded i felt a wave of relief. There...there that elusive bastard was. Just standing there looking mysterious and creepy, but he was there nonetheless. That was all that mattered. I felt joy rushing through me and a big smile slowly forming on my face as I purchased the MIDA! I had done it....I had actually done it. I had beat all odds and successfully gotten the glorious MIDA! I squealed with joy as I tested it out in the cosmodrome It. Was. Awesome! After overusing the MIDA like a child abuses a new toy and murdering lv 5 dregs, I headed back to the tower. There I picked the rest of my gear and some engrams I had gotten after beating the heroic strike on my second hunter. At this point i was exhausted. I had stayed up all night playing and it was 6 am; my body could not take any more gaming. I seemlessly decrypted my engrams one after another. Then all of the sudden I saw a golden flash followed by a loud bwam! My legendary heavy weapon engram had decrypted into an exotic! "Hell yeah!" I yelled in a sleepy tone. It was a rocket. I looked at the perks, but saw nothing cool or interesting. The design was pretty cool, but I was like, "I'll never use it. I already have truth and I just got MIDA." So I foolishly stored it in my vault and went to bed. All night I dreamt of all the things I would accomplish with my newfound favorite weapon. But... Little did I know I had just gotten the weapon that would one day become the most iconic weapon in destiny. A weapon so powerful you would be kicked from fireteams for not having it. A weapon that would make any boss shit themselves at the thought of it. A weapon that would make men out of boys. I don't recall there being a famine because you didn't really need them for anything except an exotic you didn't have from xur. You couldn't use them for anything else until later in yr2 lol. So you just stockpiled them for ages. Not sure why people where out of them back then.
