I'm absolutely for reward for effort, but you're drawing parallels between PvP and PvE that really don't hold up. PvE, even at the highest levels boils down to learning patterns. While AI can throw in some curve balls it can't hold a candle to the improvisation and random nature of PvP combat.
I don't disagree that PVP is harder, but I still think the comparison holds. If you were to ask the hardcore raid community to would actually prefer raids be even harder. The most extreme challenge themselves even more by attempting to complete the raid with less than the amount recommended.
The harder something is to achieve, the sweater the reward. Watering down the lighthouse by making it easier would not help the game mode, it would make it like iron banner (rewards for everyone, just for playing), and we don't need another iron banner.
If Bungie would release numbers on % of community who completes the Hard Raids and Challenges vs. those who complete a flawless trials card I think we'd clearly see there are far fewer players who ever go flawless.
I would say a better comparison would be challenge mode vs flawless runs. 7 wins on a card would be more comparable to a hard mode completion.

Sure there are people out there who challenge themselves by doing the raids solo, or at least as close to it as the mechanics allow. There are also people who speed run. There are people who do solo trials runs. None of this means that we should be catering to an extreme minority of the population, and the idea of challenge vs reward completely falls apart when people can just pay someone to earn the rewards for them. I sound like a broken record here, but you can't have it both ways. Either Trials is a competitive challenging game mode where rewards must be earned or you can just pay someone to carry you there. If you think carries are ok then you're already contradicting yourself so why not just open the whole thing up?

People also get carried through raids, this is always a side effect to any challenging content. I wouldn't say I am or am not okay with it but there is really nothing you can do to prevent this. I will say, I would not be against them clamping down on paid carries. That does hurt this game. (There are those who pay for raid carries as well.) If they took the grimoire card off of the lighthouse, I think less would care about achieving it.
