So here's the scenario, my father is getting my little brother and sister smartphones for christmas. Everyone disagrees with the idea, but he doesn't care.
My siblings already have ipods, which they are not responsible with. My father is doing this because he is sick of letting them use his phone since it has data so they can play pokemon go anywhere.
He wants me to give up one of my older phones for him to re-gift it to one of them and add it to his plan. I said no way, they are too young and irresponsible for smartphones right now. So he is pissed off.
What are your thoughts on the matter? I'm afraid that something as stupid as this will tear the relationship I have with my dad apart.
Edit: I decided to give my old phone to my father, so there are no problems. But I still will voice my opinion to him.

As long as it's an iPhone 4 or older I think it's fine

1 RespuestaSmartphones should be given based on maturity

18 RespuestasY'know what I say to this stuff? BULLSHIT Kids should NOT have phones! It makes them rely on them too much and it makes them vulnerable to things like online predators. If your father is gonna get them smart phones then tell him to tell them about internet dangers. If he doesn't bother to tell them about it, then either do it yourself or tell him that he's putting his own children in all sorts of danger. Pardon the expression, but don't pussyfoot (that's an actual word and not something derogatory) around it either; tell them the reasons for things like not giving personal info and the like. If you don't then they'll never understand. *resumes with chillin' like strawberry fillin'*

10 RespuestasI don't understand why a kid having a smartphone is such an issue.

2 RespuestasUnless it is financially a problem give him the phone. A bond with a dad is a thing that should be kept.

2 RespuestasEditado por Offtopickle: 12/18/2016 6:53:19 AMNo the reason why he's giving them smartphones is infuriating to me.... why don't you be good dad and say no from time to time? and for the records no. smartphones at 10? ffs wait till they's 15 ATLEAST.

The reasoning behind your Dad's decision is idiotic, lazy, and poor parenting.
-
Yes especially with the app life 360 or other similar app , this helps you keep tabs on where your children or child is at all times if the phone is on his or her person.

1 RespuestaHe should be getting them gameboys if they want Pokemon. That's what most of us offtopicians had when we were 8-10
-
1 RespuestaGet them a ladybug color phone that only calls home or 911, I heard those are in style.
-
No lmao

Flip phones were cooler anyway.

I wasn't allowed to get my first phone until I was 16. Those kids should be outside playing with sticks or something
-
A phone yes but not a smartphone
-
>implying nine year olds can have phones
-
If it's just for games, while they still probably shouldn't have it, your father could just not give them call and text. But if they already have iPod's, and aren't aren't responsible with them to boot, I don't think it's the best idea.
-
Getting a smartphone with restrictions seems better to me, delete most games and apps

It depends on the maturity level of the kid and the situation they're in. If they're home alone a lot or just not with they're parents, it's only logical for them to have a phone if something goes wrong. If it's just for Pokemon go, someone can just use the hotspot for their iPods. At their age, they should have someone with them anyway.
