In your ideal book or film, what would the villain/antagonist be like?
Human
This kind of villain is the kind you understand. You can see where they come from and why they're doing the things they do. They garner your sympathy, and you're almost sad when they're defeated. They might not be happy, but they believe they are doing what needs to be done for the greater good.
Force Of Nature
These are the approaching storms, the terminal illnesses, the doomsday clocks. They're often the opponents in a race against time, or the insurmountable challenge the hero must face. Often they're the event that starts the story, kicking things into action.
Charismatic
These guys are the charming ones. They're the kind used to having their way, and their confident, yet laid back attitude puts one at ease, all the way until it breaks down in front of your eyes. They'll usually keep in contact with the hero, either to gloat, or simply to talk.
Evil Beyond Compare
Force of nature given a body. They'll stop at nothing to win, tormenting the hero psychologically and physically. There's no low they won't stoop to, no heinous act they won't consider. Pure madness incarnate.
So choose, and tell me why. I'm genuinely curious to know which is popular.

A villain who is equal in power with the hero, making the hero actually need to use his brains to outsmart the villain instead of punching him a few times and saving the world and getting the girl.

1 RespuestaHonestly, it depends on the story. Largely, they are either the villains you love to hate (ex: Handsome Jack) villains that are so far gone you can only hate them with every fiber of your being. Otherwise, I could break my preferences down into three more categories: 1) Villains with a Cause: They are not out to be evil or simply wreak havoc. They have a very specific goal in mind and believe what they are doing is right. Doing something for "the greater good" is a common theme for them. They could almost be considered anti-heroes, but they are just a little too far gone. 2) Evil Beyond Compare, as listed above, is pretty good in my book. 3) Supernatural/Beyond Comprehension: There is the dark entity that you never get to see or confront directly, but it permeates everything around you. While it is everywhere, you never quite understand it in full because you can't. Just knowing it is there and it is malicious is the best you can do and still live.

The Joker is possibly the most interesting and iconic fictional villain of all English literature.

You know how you can love to hate a villain? The joker is the opposite, you hate to love him. You know he's evil and is a killer but he's just so likeable and funny, especially when played by mark hamill.
