The Elder Scrolls series is as follows:
1) Arena, 2) Daggerfall, 3) Morrowind, 4) Oblivion, 5) Skyrim. The original still has the largest amount of content despite being from 1994.
Regardless... your comparison is invalid because: for one, the only Elder Scrolls game that uses a persistent online game world is ESO, which is too new to use for comparison purposes. And for another, in Skyrim and it's predecessors, you can always go back to your old characters because they are stored locally. Destiny characters are stored on Bungie servers, and Bungie could at any time say "New game!" and shut off access to the old content completely. This doesn't just end progression, it invalidates progression and makes all previous accomplishments essentially worthless.
Food for thought.
Do you like to go back and play old games? Not an argument, just a question. I do. I still go back and replay old original Xbox games on my 360, and i check the Backwards Compatibility list every few days to see what i can play on my Xbox 1. If Destiny had an offline mode, I'd play it offline forever once Bungie stopped supporting it. I wouldn't be able to play anything with matchmaking, of course, but i can't say I'd mind. I run solo most of the time anyway. That's the thing about keeping character progression online. If all of it goes away once the game "ends", and i can't access it anymore, then I've essentially wasted my time.
Yes, I like to go back and play the oldies.
Now days purchase items are timed exclusive. Buy a car, it's worth something until it breaks/gets old/get sold. Same thing with television providers. Games, for the most part, are turning out this way too. Eventually they are no longer relevant. You pay for usage.
I've had my fill of Destiny. It's time for (unnamed Destiny 2 title). What happens if (Destiny 2) has new abilities? The only useable feature to carry over would be looks and shaders. With the abundance of shaders we wouldn't receive very many new ones. I like what I've done with my characters, but it's time to put them out to pasture.
