All Hive are born as larvae and develop into Thrall. From there the standard path is to next become an acolyte, and then a Knight, Wizard, or King. Knight, Wizard, and King are all mutually exclusive branches of the same stage. Each "morph" they take to reach the next level of progression requires a certain level of power according to sword logic, meaning even the youngest knights and wizards tend to be centuries old. It isn't until the final morph that they become truly gendered, with Wizards being truly female and capable of spawning broods and Knights and the King being truly male and capable of fathering broods. It is also possible that at the thrall stage they can be selected to go through a process involving a series of painful rituals that will turn the thrall into an Ogre.

I just realized something.
Thralls being chosen and undergoing a transformation into ogres, which I bet is not an event all thrall survive, parallels the original Spartan program from Halo. Children (thralls) being chosen to become something more powerful (Halsey kidnapping John and the others) and some don't survive the enhancement process (the rituals, and not all thrall probably survive). They become a more powerful being (Ogres), and the rest is history.
Editado por Dbread: 10/18/2016 7:02:07 PMKnights can actually be both genders. Xivu Arath chose the Knight form, yet she remained female.
-
True, but as of now she is the singular exception to this rule. I'm not sure if she's just special, or rules varry between the 3 siblings' broods, or if for whatever reason Bungie hasn't show us any other female Knights.
-
It's possible that other Knights are female and we're just unaware of it. Hive names aren't very telling of gender and we don't know if female Knights look any different from male Knights.

Why has no one(except Oryx) chosen the King morph?
If Ogres are mutated Thrall, and Cursed Thrall are cursed, why are there no Cursed Ogres?
-
I feel like they would be a tad OP... "Oh here let me just snipe this cursed og-" *guardian down* *guardian down* *guardian down*
-
Want to know what's really OP? Blind Ogres. Remember those Blind Thrall in the Mausoleum? Imagine that, but an Ogre.
-
Oh god no... the nightmares... the screams...
-
It seems there is only ever one King, so the last one we know of was Oryx's father billions of years ago. With regards to the Ogres vs Cursed Thrall, we have no specific reason as to why, but I feel it's fairly safe to assume whatever processes make them are mutually exclusive.
-
So, at any given time, there can only be one King?
-
Seems so.
-
But if there can only be one King, why were all the others(Malok, Alak-Hul, etc.) contenders to take his mantle? They were Knights, not Kings.
Sorry if I'm pestering you with questions.
-
The mantle of Taken King and the position of King of the Osmium Throne are two different titles that just happened to be held by the same person while Oryx was around. All those you've mentioned were all vying for the position of Taken King, not for the Osmium Throne, though we can probably assume they'd have the power to claim that too. Whether or not a Wizard or Knight could take on a King morph or not is unknown, since this is new territory, we have no example to go off of.
And questions are never a bother so feel free to ask whatever.
-
So, Oryx held both the Osmium Throne and the Taken King mantles at the same time. If Savathûn and Xivu Arath are off who knows where, and Oryx came for bloody revenge, then what's going on at Fundament? Has Taox decided to cone out of hiding and rule, while the trio are away?
Or did Fundament go the way of Alderaan?
-
Well, Oryx only kind of came for revenge, but that is a very minor reason. Yes Oryx loved Crota, but according to the very philosophy Oryx has dedicated his existence to, if Crota died he deserved it and the universe is better for it. The biggest thing is Crota represents a significant portion of Oryx's tithe. Killing Crota forces Oryx to do something grand to compensate for the drop in sword logic, in this case conquering our system and killing those who killed Crota. With regards to Fundament, who knows? The god-wave happened and anyone who didn't get off world was killed. That did happen billions of years ago though and Oryx never revisited it, so other life may have developed. Same kind of goes for Taox, as of now we have no idea what has happened to her since her last appearance in the Book of Sorrow.
-
Ok. But, if Oryx came to kill us for the Sword logic and all that, what's the point of having Thalnok? So he could have two Crotas, giving double the tithe, or was Thalnok a recent creation?
I think he was a jester.
-
Pretty much. Thalnok was basically just kept around for the entertainment factor because Oryx liked to laugh at his stupidity sometimes.
-
Oryx never told Thalnok to be a fool. If you read the grimoire of Oryx's court they weren't the sharpest knives in the drawer. Thalnok was obsessed with Crota and Oryx thought it was funny. Vorlog worshipped the Vex and killed Oryx's celebrants. He kept them around for different reasons but I imagine they did their jobs well...kill things.
-
No where did I say Oryx told Thalnok to be a fool. But what he does and what's he's told to do aren't necessarily the same thing are they. For Thalnok's card:
Laugh and laugh and Thanlnok, he is easily deceived. He will never here the song. Diminished in sense. Small of purpose. ..... I created Thalnok to my Court so I might observe my son through faithful foolish proxy.
Yes. He keep Thalnok around for entertainment.

My post was supposed to be to the OP and not you but ai replied to the wrong person. Ive read hia card 1000 times lol. I even included him in my BoS add on that I'm writing. Thanks for answering my many questions.

Thank you so much! I have been confused on this for so long
