With recent rumours swirling around as to the nature of Destiny's coming sequal, Destiny 2, the old question remains: will the sequal reset our progress?
If so, I can say quite confidently: I WILL QUIT.
I say this not in the general vein of mindless complaining that generally characterizes these forums, but in the spirit of a concerned fan and player that loves the game. I'm 25, a Junior undergraduate and double major. What little free time I have, much of it has been spent raiding and grinding much like the rest of you. I love Destiny. I feel a certain sense of affinity and accomplishment toward my three characters, and each piece of hard earned gear and weaponry that makes them distinct. I am invested as a player in what they have become. They are worth more to me than a special emblem or weapon given in Destiny 2, with the intent of tickling my pride like some cereal box trophy.
I'm an adult gammer. And having limmited time for leisure means that I want the activities I spend time on to matter. While I don't want too seem like an old man spouting a "You youngsters don't get it" mentality, I'm not sure if my fellow guardians bellow college age will understand how I feel. Let me ask you this: when you go to college, or choose a career path, would you invest your time and energy in an education program you know will be obsolete before you graduate/earn your certification? Simply, would you take a class that counts toward your major this semester, but that your school will obsolete before you graduate, erassing the credits you earn? Time is an investment, one that you hope will carry into the future.
Well, Destiny is much like college, in that it is an interactive system demanding time and personal investment from its players. Just like obsoleting a class that students have taken, completely erasing our progress in Destiny 2 would amount to nothing less than a breach of trust; as well as a disregard for every hour and ounce of energy that we the players have given in our pursuit of the Light.
I don't know about you, but everything I have done in this game is worth something, and deserves to carry on into future iterations of Destiny. If not, I Will no longer be able to view this game as a worth while investment. I will quit, not in anger, but from sheer disillusionment.
Please note: I also want a "new game". But I also want the characters I have created, and some portion of the rewards they have earned to carry over. I want what I have done for the past 4 years to count count for something.
I say we wait and see what Destiny 2 actually is before we start making crazy proclamations.
