A couple people seem to be onboard with the crowdfunding thing, but I want to get his permission before I go and set up a page. Just want to make sure I'm not overstepping any boundaries and that he's comfortable with the whole thing.
This isn't a troll post or some kind of sick joke. His name is Jake. He's 23 years old like me and he's got Leukemia now... He's a guardian too, been one since Vanilla.
He started having pains three weeks ago and was finally admitted this weekend after it being too much to handle. That's when they told him.
It's crazy. I know it's a cliche. The whole "you never expect it to happen to you/hit so close to home" thing. But you just don't. He's such a great guy and I know cancer doesn't discriminate but still. It's so weird.
He's taking it like a champ. Saw him today and it's still surreal to him but he's keeping his spirits up. He actually loaded up the Pre-Rise of Iron Destiny patch today while I was there. He hadn't played in a couple weeks from what he said.
I know his sickness isn't in my control, or his. I know that I can't change his cells or make the cancer go away.
That being said, I can't shake the feeling that I need to do something. I want to help him and his family out somehow.
Why am I posting here? Well, this is an amazing community. We raised over a half million a month ago for St. Jude's and I guess I just feel like this place is a place that can help me do something for him or figure something out or just garner support for him.
I have some things I'd like to do:
1. Set up a crowd funding page to take care of his medical expenses
EDIT
It was suggested to crowdfund for a holiday/time away type deal since he won't be working. Apparently the other expenses are the things that get you.
2. Flood him with supportive letters and such. Any ideas? Maybe I could turn forum posts into letters somehow?
EDIT
Setting up a PO box sounds like a cool idea. I'll update with any progress on that if that happens.
I'll think of more stuff I'm sure. I just want him to feel like he can do this you know. No matter what the outcome in the end is, I want for him to at least feel like he can make it and that we believe in him.
I'll keep everyone updated on this post as different things develop if anyone's interested. Thanks for reading guys...
