Dumb question probably...but what IS the darkness? Is it the hive, fallen, cabal and vex combined?

I believe the darkness was created by the traveler as a natural competition to the light.... Similar principal to what goes up must come down so as to say what has good must also have evil. I still believe we don't know enough about the traveler

In a sense, but those are merely its instruments. The Darkness as Ive come to understand it from the availible materials is essentially the manifestation of what we would call evil. The antithesis to the light. We have our Travaler who is a conduit of the light, but he is not THE light. In the same sense, no one species or group of species is the darkness, but it acts through them. Even the Heart of The Black Garden is only a pawn in a huge game of balance fought since the beggining of time, and we only play a very small part in the big picture.

the darkness refers to a type of existence that sees destruction and pain as the means of achieving a more perfect reality (i.e. the sword logic of the Hive). This is opposed to the Light, which is a more traditional type of existence which values harmony/life/peace as the means of achieving a better reality. So really, the only true agents of the darkness so far are the Hive and their worm gods: the Fallen are just another species seeking to survive and reclaim the traveler, and the cabal seem to just be another alien civilization aligned with neither the Light nor the darkness

The fallen were a race that flourished when the traveller came to them before to Earth. When the darkness attacked the traveller it escaped decimating the Eldrani, I believe they are called, which became this scavenging group of aliens called the fallen. The fallen are on earth because they want the Traveller back. I think the only reason the Traveller is dormant on earth is because Rasputin prevented it from leaving forcing the Traveller to make ghosts, which created us guardians as a last ditch effort of survival.

The darkness is all who are not blessed or protected(the last of the humans) by the light (basically an analogy for the traveler) or made of the light (guardians and ghosts). I say this because our armor augments our abilites. Ie when a helmet says it boosts super energy for melee kills on minions of darkness ect. Small tack to hang such a big idea but it's all I got to go by.

No, they've all probably had the traveller at some point and they all want it back.

The hive are working for the darkness as it's emissaries. In doing so the started a war with the Cabal and Vex. The cabal are trying to find a way to destroy the hive and believe the Vex have the answer. They are also now trying to discover how to kill the guardians and is one of the reasons they boarded the dreadnought. The Vex are at war with the Hive and trying to become the perfect shape. They want to exist in all times and be the last race standing. The fallen are a broken race who had been lifted up by the Traveller. When the Traveller fled/left their system. The Darkness decimated them. The fled the Darkness and began to pursue the Traveller. They also believe we stole the Traveller from them and therefore caused their downfall. The want the Traveller back and refer to it as the great machine.
