Okay, a few moments ago I replied in a post of how SMG's should be in destiny, and this is my idea of it.
First, it would be in the SPECIAL slot. It should be designed as a Personal Defense Weapon (just like they are called in BF3/BF4) and that's how they should act.
Second, this weapon class should be fitted for CLOSE to MEDIUM range, not more than medium by ANY means (and here they would be not as effective as most of primary weapons). The damage drop-off will we severe if it surpasses it's effective range.
Next, it's stats and how I see them: Most of them should have high RoF and low impact (not as much as, let's say, a CZ3A1, but 800 rpm should be the okay as the highest RoF archetype), also, the impact should be on par or even higher than ARs since they are made to defend you in desesperate encounters. As I said they would lack range to drop it's effectiveness to only close range, and poor stability to aid that. Their reload speed should be above average at worst and (bear with me here) they should have specially GOOD hip-fire accuracy at close range. Their mag shouldn't surpass 40 and be below 20 without any perk involved, and as for reserve goes it should depend heavily on the archetype of the SMG, but, let's say, a 40 bullet mag SMG shouldn't have more than 160 in total (mag+reserve).
Now for the looks. They should look small, compact ARs (that's what they are after all) and most of them (if not all) should lack the stock.
Last, it's spot in the game: They should be in the range where shotguns start to decay but other weapons are not as powerful in close combat. In PvE they should be where readying a shotgun it's too slow and, if it was just in time, missing the shot would result in death or the shot wasn't enough to kill the enemy (those cabals i.e.).
Sidearm vs SMG's: This is easy, Sidearms are very easy to use, and have very fast ready times, they are more accurate and can be useful at longer ranges, that's why.
I'm sure someone had this idea (in fact, plenty if guardians already said they want SMG's) but this is my take on it as a realistic, fully fleshed idea. Feedback would be appreciated, but please, be respectful. If you don't like the idea I would like to know why, and also I would like your ideas to improve it. Thanks for reading!

I don't think smgs as a class should exist but should make an appearance in the form of an exotic or two similar to the way Sleeper Simulant gives us a taste of a new type of weapon. The Sleeper's design and function are unique and provides a class in and of itself that's powerful but imperfect. It's flaws make the user want to be good at the weapon and learn every situation it can be used in. Dreg's promise was a start but considering the underwhelming performance of the weapon, I hope that's not the finish line. I liked the idea of sidearms but visually I was annoyed that these quickdraw weapons resembled mini handcannons so closely. To keep things sci-fi I would have liked all sidearms to be wrist mounted blasters that function the same way with a magazine based on overheating instead of ammo count. The damage of Sidearms should be enough to start or end a "conversation" but shouldn't be around for the entirety of one.

5 RespuestasI'd use an smg/pdw more than a shotgun if they were in the game. I use a sidearm but they don't quite feel right when i pull it out on a shotgun rusher. If i had a special with fast draw rate that would melt a guy close to me i'd be over the moon. Would you spawn in with reserves or about 1 mag like sidearms or do you think that once your out your out for ammo?

2 RespuestasWhile I do agree that it'd be fun to have one in game, I feel like that completely defeats the point of ARs for PVE at least. Why use an AR when you have a special weapon that does the exact same thing. I know that at least I would completely ditch ARs all together if I could get a special weapon version, since then I could have a scout rifle for long range and a SMG for close. There are also a couple stats and other things that I'm curious about Bodyshot damage in PVP Headshot damage in PVP Time to Kill in PVP (absolute fastest) How auto rifles would remain viable with such a strong replacement in PVP and PVE I definitely think that something similar to this would be a cool addition to the game, but I think it needs to be introduced as an exotic first, to give people a chance to respond to it before it goes either rampant in the crucible or becomes a joke. Smaller damn rounds so they can fire faster. Use common sense. The only thing you're trying to get is a new special to rush someone's face with because you want them to have higher impact than AR. Yeah no. SMGs in real life have lower impact than Assault because the rounds are smaller which means they don't pack as much a punch as a 7.62, 7.92, etc. Save for a few SMGs that are outfitted with anti tank rounds.

1 RespuestaGood idea. Remove high RoF-low impact auto rifles from primary slots (e.g. Doctrine of Passing archtype) and buff them up to the 88 RoF-8 impact archtype (e.g. Paleocontact). Make SMGs have 100 RoF-2 impact, but drastically reduce their range and stability. Add screen shake as well while ADS and firing, just like Hard Light has. Give them small magazines, like you said around 20-30 bullets, and elemental burns. All SMGs should come with a select fire option, kinda like how all sidearms always have reserve ammo, that allows them to fire full auto or burst fire (like a mini pulse rifle).

I really want something like this as well, the thing is: we already have fusion rifles that serve largely the same purpose. It's a high burst of damage that requires tracking, which is what fusions do, so why would they need to implement these? Would SMG's always spawn with ammo? How big of a magazine would they have? What are your thoughts on ammo capacity?

No.. I see them making an exotic automatic sidearm in the future, but not a whole class.. Thats all SMGs are... Glorified sidearms... Id much rather stick a stock on a sidearm and turn it into an SBR..
