You missed the part where in real life I am a pacifist. I cry when cats die that aren't even mine. I am appalled by real violence, just not the obviously fake virtual stuff. I have a sound healthy mind which can discern the real from the fake.
Just because you live in a nice clean violence-less bubble that somehow makes violence this strange concept to you, doesn't mean today isn't far more peaceful than the times when people were slaughtered for just about any reason.
If violence today is so bad then where are the Vikings doing unspeakable things and pillaging?
Where are the Roman Colosseums where slaves and animals are killed for the entertainment of crowds?
Where are the witch hunts where homosexual people are used for kindling?
Where are the Crusades to take back the Holy Land through bloodshed?
Where is the Spanish Inquisition torturing and killing people for not believing in a possibly not real god?
By history's standards this is the most peaceful time we have ever had. Most nations AREN'T at war, and the justice systems while far from perfect at least try to persecute criminals without just killing or maiming them.
Those people who are unhinged mentally, they can commit atrocities without any form of modern media to "influence" them. Genghis Khan didn't have GTA 5, yet he was one of the worst tyrants in history, a man who killed pregnant women.
So how am I, a pacifist and man of peace, the kind of person that the OP is talking about?

You missed the whole point. It's not about violence in the world, or my "violence free bubble" that you assume I live in. It's about the numbing effect it has on you when you continually play those kinds of games or watch those kinds of shows. How far have we come as a society in the last 50 or so years because of it? We've gone from I Love Lucy where they slept in separate beds so no one could insinuate sexual relations or even show her from the waist down because she was pregnant, to reality TV where the people just argue, fight and insult each other the whole time, all the way to shows like The Walking Dead, and even a primetime TV show starring The Devil. How did we come this far? Each generation brings a bigger, bolder version of edginess and conflict. It's previous generation seems tame in comparison. It's a cascading effect, and we already hear several of the "naughty" words on primetime cable shows. Some of them are no longer considered an automatic R or M rating. Why is that? We've become numb to them. It's no longer "a big deal". That cascading effect has made its way into video games. Mortal Kombat back in the day caused a huge uproar among parents. And now? We have games like GTA V where the sole purpose of the game is to commit crimes and maybe -blam!- a stripper in the process. Where will it end? Why do we feel the need to feed not only our minds, but our children's that kind of stuff as well?
