I have my doubts since it will mean a decrease in future sales for them.

Decrease in sales for what reason?

Decrease in the sales of consoles. There is no need to buy a new console if you can just upgrade parts of the old one to keep up with modern games. Think of it this way. How many people would buy a ps4 if they could upgrade the storage and performance of a ps3 to play any graphic intense game the ps4 can? If the ability to upgrade consoles are introduce, it will just end up being like a pc. I know many who own both a ps3 and ps4 but if upgrading parts were possible I don't see why someone would have both, just like it will be odd for someone to have two pcs, one that plays low graphic games and another that plays graphical intense games.

They could easily rig it to where you had to buy the parts from Sony or Microsoft though so they would still keep profits. Just make them have some weird attachment or whatever that only that company makes and problem solved.

But the ps3 was the last console sony made that used parts made by them. The ps4 uses parts that xbox has been using. Many of their parts are now built by other companies instead of them. If they were to rig the ps to be the way you are suggesting, they will just be going backwards on their progress. The ps4 and xbox one can now play more games that used to be only played on a pc mainly because their parts are now mimicking that of a pc which develops find great since it make it easier for them to port their games over to console. And even if they were to rig parts that only work for them, they would make less money selling parts than selling the whole unit. Why would someone bother to buy a new console if they can just replace the broken parts easily?
