I figured this was the best place to go to ask this question.
I'm someone who was a day one Destiny hardcore player and fan. Playing this game during the first year it was out was some of the most fun I had with gaming in a while, and right before The Taken King was released, I believe I had somewhere in the ballpark of 1,500+ hours into the game.
However (and try not beat me up too much on this part), I quit playing the game after hearing about The Taken King, because I felt all my time/grinding was all for nothing.
I know a lot has changed with the game since my last experiences with it, but I can't deny I want to get back into playing Destiny. What worries me is how far behind I am on everything--especially with Rise of Iron coming out soon.
NO B.S.--Is it worth buying The Taken King NOW and attempting to get back into this game? Will I have any chance of "catching up" and feeling like a relevant player in any timely way if I attempt to get back into it now?
I would love to hear some honest thoughts from some vet players out there. Thanks!

Definitely. I hated year one honestly, but TTK improved the game in so many ways. I grinded through TTK for a few months and then quit for a while. And now I'm back again. The game is addicting and lots of fun.

Just play if u love the game u will realize that most grindings is for mothing

1 RespuestaIt's easier than ever to level up now after the infusion 1/1 ratio. You can rank up to 300ish in a week now because of how drop rates in engrams/crucible/strikes are lot higher and designed to be higher light levels to keep you progressing and from plateauing. You got more than enough time to catch up before rise of iron is released

1 RespuestaSo, Destiny is some of the most fun that you've ever had in a game, but then quit for some trivial reason and now need to get justification from other people before you play it again? I think that you just described what is wrong with a large subset of the gaming community.

It's a video game, if you have fun playing it solo or with friends then yes.

Playing through this game from the beginning, now vs. launch, is incomparable. At launch I would have given it a 5/10. Now, that number is easily 8-9/10. My 2 cents.

3 RespuestasNo, it costs extra for each DLC. Just wait till the full game comes out.

3 RespuestasI've been in it since beta (one of the reasons I got a ps4) & I'm almost tempted to say wait till next year for the full sequel. ...but theres story mode stuff that I enjoyed in ttk that were greatly improved from vanilla, as well as the April update. If you got the $ and the time to play, try it out. I've certainly wasted $ on much worse games recently (looking at you battlefront :p).

No The game still has fun features but Bungie is on an unclear path and communicates very little about major changes they make. It could turn out great, it may not. You will find out 200+ dollars later. Play but don't buy. If they are in a good place later the content will be cheaper and if not you didn't pay anyway hahah

I took 7 months off myself came back recently and have been having fun all over again. I was lucky enough to come back during the last Iron Banner so was able to bring my light level up pretty quick. Went from 300 to 329 in a few days. I don't raid so hoping the next IB brings me some more good drops.

I went from Zero to 329 in Two weeks. You can bounce back pretty quickly.

Don't worry too much about being behind. As far as I know, everything from the Taken King will be infusible in Rise of Iron. It is more of a continuation to the Taken King if you know what I mean. So, you won't be earning all the Taken King rewards for nothing. (I am also a beta player who took a long break recently.) Go for it man.

12 RespuestasIf you buy the ttk now you should have enough content to last you till rise of iron.
