Edit: Putting this at the beginning so people who don't care to read will actually see it. This IS NOT about Sniper Aim Assist. Read the post and you will see I mention snipers briefly and they are only used as an example of WEAPON DIVERSITY. Thanks for your time.
I'll start this off by saying this: I do NOT want 0 aim assist in Destiny, that just wouldn't be fun. Aim assist is a fundamental necessity to almost every console game. However: the way aim assist functions in Destiny as of now is truly a broken mechanic at its core.
So let's break this down from fundamental standpoint: Aim assist is in nearly every console FPS because a console controller cannot aim nearly as well as a Mouse on a computer can. People who want no aim assist on guns are crazy and it would make a game very difficult and just not fun.
The problem with aim assist in Destiny is the ability to increase it. Never in a game should a player be able to increase the amount of work the game does for them. Through different sights and perks a player can allow their gun to do the work for them and correct their inaccuracies. So let's go back to the fundamental job of Aim Assist: To correct the inaccuracy of the controller.
Currently Aim Assist oversteps it's bounds. Aim Assist no longer corrects the inaccuracy of the controller, but goes further as to correct the inaccuracy of the player and reward their mistakes. One of the best perks in the game is "Hidden Hand." This perk gives an increase to the amount of work the game will do for the player. That is a mechanic that is ridiculous.
The final problem with Aim Assist is the weapon diversity it prevents. Most people HEAVILY favor the Longbow over the LDR 5001 for the reason of "The Longbow has more Aim Assist." Oh so you mean "The Longbow let's the game do more work for me."
Aim assist should never be a variable statistic among weapons, it lessens the element of skill and doesn't promote weapon diversity. Guns in Destiny need a a level of aim assist lower than most guns ATM and it needs to be constant across all guns. It shouldn't be able to be changed in any way, shape, or form.
I'll close with this: Destiny is at a point where the greater of two seemingly equal guns is decided by the value of Aim Assist. That is Pathetic.
Edit: It appears the only way people can counter an argument is by looking at KD, pretty pathetic.
Edit 2: Thanks to everyone who has left constructive replies and well thought out opinions, I have read every one of them. I love all of the great discussions we have had so far.
Edit 3: I'm gonna try not to reply to the idiots down below (which sadly is a lot of people) and only reply to people with a real knowledge of game balance.
