What needs to be understood about SBMM

Skill based matchmaking exists to separate inexperienced players from the hardcore & the decent from the almost ok. In the capacity it currently exists it seeks to get everyone as close to a 1.0 k/d & 50% win/loss as possible. Most importantly it exists to make the experience as competitive as possible for the players involved. That means games are tougher, but not necessarily closer especially when players often quit games they don't do well in (I see it a lot from guys with good stats) which leads to very large differences in score. That means there are less players you can get matched against the higher your "skill" is & the more latency you'll face because of that. In y1 it existed but not to the extent it does now & there were many more players in each bracket. Bungie openly admitted they've changed the matchmaking on multiple occasions for those "special snowflakes" who believe it's always been the same. For the "casual" side of things: We understand that you don't want to "get stomped" every match but that never happened in every match. Maybe often but most certainly not every game. We understand you might not be having problems with the current matchmaking but we are. You might not see the latency since there are many of you but that isn't the case for everyone. From the "hardcore" side: We don't want to get rid of SBMM "just so we can go back to pubstomping", we just want to be able to enjoy matches without having to try our hardest just to win or just to go positive. We want to play a game without going against players halfway across the world who seem to reject the idea of taking damage. We want to be able to play crucible with our friends who may not be as experienced without them getting smashed every single game because SBMM is intentionally matching us against players above their skill level. Bottom line: Skill Based Matchmaking is for competitive games in competitive playlists, it doesn't belong in a game with no ranked playlists or dedicated servers. Bungie has not supported destiny in a competitive way since release so what is the point of competitive matchmaking in a casual experience? I personally do not have fun consistently playing against 1.6+ highly skilled players when I'm much too inconsistent a player & matchmaking gives me teammates below the skill level of the rest of the lobby. How am I supposed to win a game, go positive, or even have fun when I get matched against a 3 man where the average kd is 2.0 & my blueberries leave since they can't do anything? Tl;Dr: SBMM is not fun or practical in a game with bad netcode & no reason to be competitive. [spoiler]The most problematic part of SBMM is that it helps more players than it hurts so it always seperates the community in any game it's put into[/spoiler]

    I'm not actually opposed to SBMM. Generally you want to play people around your level otherwise it is going to be a slaughter, which IMO is not as fun for either side. I also think the game fundamentals, code, architecture whatever you prefer is causing the lag, not SBMM. Bungie's reaction to the nonstop stream of posts about lag (mostly, lack of reaction) is the most revealing reason I believe this.

    • Hah lucky. I get matched with all 2.0's. Though I like a challenge so I don't complain. Sbmm is alright.

    • Sbmm really doesn't help or hurt anyone It just kinda keeps you at a stalemate in this game, in other games it helps you get better The reason I say for this game is due to matchmaking putting you against opponents that are similar in skill but they are red bar heroes, can't really get better facing an opponent that won't take damage and doesn't show up on radar That's why they need to remove it in this game, if they had dedicated servers then all those red bar heroes would be severely punished for their connections and SBMM would work but we are on a P2P network and it just doesn't jive

      • At least you admit you just want to get rid of it to win games without having to try. You fail, however, to acknowledge what a selfish, antisocial attitude that is. Further, it's more than a little silly to tailor any large system to accommodate a small minority.

        • It seems lost on the high k/d players that EVERYONE has to fight for the win under SBMM, not just the superstars. I'm only a 1.0, but if I don't do my part, chances are we are going to lose. So middle k/d players experience the same level of competition as you do - just against others of like skill. I too have those games where I know my team is inferior too the opposition, and I have a few where we dominate as a team. But most of the time the games are close. You want to come down into my game so you can relax is what it sounds like. But that would just make the game more sweaty for six more people so you could have a little fun. I think Bungie has it right with SBMM, even if it isn't perfect.

          • I don't care about SBMM one way or another. I just want a solid connection. I don't go into the Crucible to relax, I go into the Crucible to Win. I'm not even a competitive person by nature, so I don't think I'm an outlier here. Any game with winners and losers is not going to be a relaxing experience. I've never heard NFL players complain that they wanted to play high schoolers just so they wouldn't have to try that hard to win. If you want to have fun, go have fun. Throw your cares about your k/d to the wind. No one but yourself is making you care about your win loss ratio or your k/d. [spoiler]As for SBMM, if it's as prevalent in this game as people claim, why am I getting paired up with 2.0+ k/d, top 1% PvPers, when I'm obviously not in that Weight Class. It's almost like the community exaggerates the problem...[/spoiler]

            • I dgaf about the skill level, just give me a solid connection to my opponents It really pisses me off when I lose engagements or trade solely because of lag I'll play better players, but i want to play them on en even footing

              • Bungie should introduce SBMM and CBMM playlist. The playlist randomly switches game modes. This would let players choose. Also SBMM needs to be filtered better. Having one players on a team that is 3.6kd and the everyone else at .45kd is not a balanced match. They need to keep players together of the same skill. The best games are when everyone is within .2kd -+

                • If you want to do away with SBMM because of lag and go to CBMM....it wont help....ok ok , maybe 1 out of 10 games it might help but as a whole you will still get red and yellows all day long, go read up on p2p...that's the issue, as far as SBMM....LOVEING IT, I love it when a game comes down to a difference of 100 points, know what I don't like? Games that end with over 2000 points difference, Why? Because 1 player cannot make that up by themselves...and I want to feel like I...ME....This guy can make the game winning kill.( Granted, game versions and points spread vary ) games with this big a spread in points causes people to leave matches....I remember year 1, people would drop from matches all the time, I cant remember how many times I went 2 vs 6....I hated that more then lag.

                  • I just say this. I usually play with my friend who has less Experience than me. And i dont mean kd. My overall is around 1, so im scrub. But when i play with him, opponets are from different world than when i play solo. When im with him, matches are more fun and enjoyable. When im solo it is so difficult that it is not even fun anymore. It is really sweaty

                      • The worst part of sbmm? It's not the lag, which is horrible. It's not the sweatiness, tho it being constant drains out the fun. The worst part for me is several of my friends won't play crucible with me, because they get destroyed. I learned this yet again in iron banner.

                            • I agree. But people still take/play this game competitively. I mean sweats are a regular thing now outside of trials matches. So I think SBMM should exist for some playlists. Like iron banner and trials. But not for the standard modes.

                              • Agreed. Ik I have a 1.0 but I'm not relly that good. I'm just about to go and let myself get killed so I can play and have fun. Not be bent over almost every map.

                              • If SBMM was working properly on its goal of 1.0k/d and win/loss why am I always losing and having a k/d below 1? I have No Skill, so why aren't I getting matched with other people just as bad as me? Why does SBMM think I'm so much better than I am??

                                A common crucible experience when playing solo (and I feel like this mirrors the OPs experience somewhat): - Load in - 2-4 red bars. They are easy to identify in game because they skip around and don't take damage. (At least not until after I die) - Within 60 seconds 1-2 people have already left the team. We may or may not get replacements. - By the end of the match, the red bars are leading the teams. - I will often (less often now.. I am super rusty.) have the highest K/D on the team but still below 1 - Rinse, repeat Man, I used to love PvP in this game.. now I feel like it's punishment for still playing... Which I do less and less. It has literally killed my interest.
