When Alak-Hul challenged Oryx he did so in the High Court as is custom of the Hive. Their philosophy is a perversely extreme version of survival of the fittest and it is the right of any Hive warrior to challenge Oryx. Alak-Hul was on the moon visiting Verok, his mate. He did not help Eris at all. May have even killed a member of her Fireteam but I forget who. We killed him because he's still an exceptionally powerful individual and was a potential successor to the mantle of Taken King. We killed him, as we did Malok, to ensure no one claimed that mantle.

-
I would of taken the Mantle.
-
And you would have been corrupted and become a threat worse than Oryx.
-
That is the truth. At least you wouldn't have to worry about the cabal empire. Just when I get bored of kill races and turn back to Earth. With another guardian at my side
-
My son, there must always be, a lich king.
-
No king lives forever.
-
This something that's kinda been bugging me. We killed all these God like powered enemy and yet we still get treated like goffers. On top of that should we be ruling the hive. Or is the fact they were have laid waste to thousands of hive and their leadership not enough to even get respect to not be shot at on sight.
-
We get shot because we kill their God.... Also we can die if our ghost is killed
-
Up to this point arent treated as goofers maybe first visit at the reef but only that time, as for ruling the hive if we did that then we would have swapped alliances to the deep and thats a no no.
-
They'll never accept a guardian as their King. We could have theoretically claimed the mantle of Taken King (but we rejected that), but we will never have a claim to the Osmium Throne.
-
You mean no one besides US can claim that mantle.
-
No. We've flat out rejected the mantle. Part of the reason Toland is so pissed in that one grimoire card. We just killed one of the most powerful entities in existence, and the universe literally aches for the hole he left to be filled, yet we reject it.
-
I'll tell Toland where he can shove it, him and the universe. This "ache" can be sated while still rejecting the corrupted power...complete extermination of the Taken and the Hive.
-
Oh I absolutely agree Toland can score himself and it was right to reject that power. Problem is, Toland is dangerously insane. He's almost certainly going to make a grab for the mantle himself.
-
Then he can meet the same end as the previous claimants. Seriously...Oryx, Alak Hul, Malok, and he'd think himself the next? However he could very well prove to be a dangerous foe. He learned that particular song first hand and knew a great deal more about the Hive than anyone else alive.
-
Man is brilliant and will be a great threat. Just kind of scary how many people still idolize him when he has the potential to become one of the biggest threats in the game.
-
I think it's just because he seemed to have a great understanding of the inner workings of the Hive, and to know your enemy is the first step to ending them.
-
I agree, but the whole "one can't stare into the abyss without the abyss staring back into you" comes to mind. Knowledge and understanding is important yes, in this universe certain knowledge has magical consequences and it can corrupt. Toland is a clear example and I personally think Osiris is treading that fine line closer than a lot of people want to admit.
-
Very much like a Space Marine fighting the forces of Chaos. The Warp is cunning and insidious, you never know who may fall victim to its touch. One must keep a clear head and maintain a clear directive, like the preservation and continued survival of humanity and the elimination of any and all who would threaten it.

He helped kill vell tarlow (think thats how you spell)
