"Stop Comparing The.." STFU
Whenever I see somebody say something along the lines of "stop comparing these two games their completely different" I lose a little more faith in humanity. How the hell else am I suppose to know which game I'm going to enjoy more?? How else would I know if I like an FPS over a Sports games? Even if they are completely separate games, I'm still going to compare them to have a better chance of getting the one I'm going to enjoy more. If that angers you a bit then I'm sorry for being smart about my purchases. Actually no, I'm not sorry at all.
If we aren't comparing two separate games, then what the hell is the point of comparisons?? I'm not gonna compare Battlefield 1 to itself... I'm gonna compare it to games like CoDIW, Watchdogs 2, Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, Dishonored 2, Crackdown 3 and even Halo -blam!-ing Wars 2 and more. Wanna know why? Because I want to have an idea of which one I would enjoy more based on [i]my[/i] preferences... Not yours, [i]mine[/i].
If you don't want to be smart and compare two different games before you buy one, then whatever, nobody is stopping you. But if you see somebody comparing two separate games, don't harass them with dumbass comments like "they're two separate games, stop comparing them" because [i]THAT'S EXACTLY WHY THAT PERSON IS COMPARING THEM[/i], you goddamn genius.
Alright I'm done now. Throw me your most harsh insults, I'll use them later.

The problem is that too many people will say "__ is gonna kill __" when discussing two very different games. At this point, any game with a gun in it is going to have at least one person calling it the new "Destiny killer". People saying "BF1 is gonna kill AW" don't seem to realize that while yes, they are shooty dude bro war games, they're still very different from eachother and have very different audiences. DICE realized this and convinced EA to let them do something more unique instead of making just another modern military shooter to nip at the heels of CoD.

Like you said, it's good to compare to know what game to buy. I use the "don't compare _ to _" when people are arguing for the sake of arguing. That crap gets annoying.

1 RespuestaIf you don't know whether you'd enjoy a FPS more or a sports game more, it sounds like you need to do a little soul searching. Game comparisons need to be done in reference to something that is relevant to what you want out of the game. Comparing Halo Wars 2 to FIFA would be stupid, because no aspect of FIFA is in Halo Wars 2. This doesn't mean that you can't enjoy both kinds of game; on the contrary, you can enjoy every genre of game, if that's your thing. But when trying to draw comparisons between games, you really are only getting useful info when the comparison is drawn between games that share an aspect. Shared aspect could be based on many factors: gameplay, mechanics, story, graphics, etc. Often times, it is easiest to compare games from the same genre, as there will likely be several similarities already. But comparing, to use your example, Battlefield 1 to Watchdogs 2 or Forza would be less helpful, because there is a lack of similarities to draw useful conclusions from.

6 RespuestasEh, you can compare the parts that make games games. Like content amount, content variety, etc. You cannot compare the shooting mechanics in a shooter to the shooting mechanics in a game where shooting is second to something else.

If I am comparing Doom to Forza in terms of which has better value for money, then the comparison is appropriate...I can look at dollar per hour, excitement and enjoyment, ability to play with friends, etc. and gauge which game is the better choice for me. This is what you have in mind and is perfectly reasonable. The other issue is when one person compares two games, using the template of the first to critique the second...these comparisons tend to be useless, as they don't judge the game on its merits. Again, let's use Doom and Forza: Doom is so much better than Forza, it is first person and has guns, rather than sometimes 3rd person and no guns. The above obviously sounds ridiculous, but it happens very frequently. For example, when people compare Battleborn to Overwatch and fault Overwatch for not having a single player campaign...while this is a valid comparison, which may change which game you would rather have, it is inappropriate to fault a competitive online arena shooter for not having a single player campaign...you might as well also fault Overwatch for not having a racing mode. TLDR - Comparisons can be both valid and invalid forms of criticism
