Who else misses the *feel* of YR 1?

Play the first few minutes of this vid and tell me you don't miss the days when Destiny's story was focused on exploration and discovery. There was a real sensation that Bungie would gradually introduce us to a rich, dynamic universe, filled with intricate politics set in rich Haloesque set pieces like the Tower and Reef, & beautifully crafted environments like the Cosmodrome. 'Lord of the Rings in space' they said. Then along came a shouty two-dimensional bad guy in a flying space rectum with an army of holographic zombies, and the rivalries between the Awoken and Humans, and between the Tower factions, and even between the enemy races and Fallen Houses, became forgotten. Tell me, honestly, that TTK's story isn't cheap & uninspiring (bizarre Grimoire cards linked to Calcified Fragments, not withstanding). All of that rich lore, and its promise of fascinating multidimensional stories lost to a simple 'good guys versus bad guys versus slightly different bad guys' grind. What will YR3 bring, I wonder. *Second Edit* Since this is now the top trender, and a lot of people still don't quite get what I mean. Those of us of a certain age remember hopping off a Pelican for the very first time, and taking a few seconds to follow Halo up out of the horizon and over our heads. Who can honestly say they didn't smile about finding a sci-fi world totally different from anything else we'd ever seen? Not just another Starwars/Star trek ripoff, but something totally new. That was over a decade ago, but the feeling stays with you long after the dated graphics and warthog rolls have faded. For me, that feeling permeated the whole of Yr1; the music, the enemies, the NPC's, everything. The story was disjointed and raised more questions than it answered, but I wanted to know more. Yr2 has introduced a lot of new gameplay features (and nerfs), some are good, some are bad, but at the same time it totally abandoned that direction of mystery and adventure. Some of you obviously prefer the straightforward good versus evil story- fair enough. But for me, I think Bungie's at their best when they make you feel like a tiny part of a big world, rather than just a tiny soldier in a big fight.

I honestly think Bungie devs don't know the game's lore They keep making new expansions with completely new stories, instead of explaining to us what was given in the base game Edit: Just found out that all the lore in the game was created at the last minute of release. Apparently since Bungie was unsatisfied with how the story played out in the game, instead of delaying it to fix the story, they decided to hire a guy within 6 months of release to create all this lore to "fix" the convoluted "story" given in the game itself Which explains why there is no UI for Grimoire in-game and on the Bungie website

    • I'm not sure exactly what happened for me personally but i went from playing nightfall and both raids every week to doing neither when TTK came out. I think it was mainly the nerfs. They hit hard. I was also a fan of yr1 guns so losing them took a little toll as well. But, i have nearly 1000 hours in the game. 10 times the time I've spent in any other game I've owned. I can't believe i still play it. Nothing is going to look fresh after seeing it literally hundreds of times, that's to be expected. I do think they kind of zapped the fun factor a bit when ttk came out. Not for everyone, but for some Destiny's potential is limitless. I think they need to reevaluate certain devs at bungie and see if they are a good fit for the sequel. Sandbox is the first thing that comes to mind. Separate pve and pvp!

I don't think that "feeling" is gone because of the direction the game is going, I think the feeling is gone because everything gets less colorful when you've seen it enough times. We've had the game for a while now with VERY little change of scenery in new places to explore. When we all expect to visit many different locations on each planet not just 1 small section of it. After visiting the same places over and over and over we pretty much peripheral vision our way through everything without stopping to recognize the cool stuff anymore because it's not all that cool after seeing it over a thousand times. I without a doubt think Destiny 2 will bring some magic back, the subclasses will be overhauled probably, maybe some new ones, there will be entirely new patrols to explore and new enemies to fight. But that feeling will never be as strong as it was because Destiny was something completely new to us when it came out and I think this happens with every game we enjoy for the first time and as time goes by. I miss the feeling I had in the alpha/beta, but all I gotta do it remember those days and I remember the feeling, sadly it's not something you can take with you forever. My girlfriend recently started playing and it's really renewed those early days for me to watch her go through it (even though she is no where near as interested as I was) because I have to play at a much slower pace for her and I've grown to really enjoy taking my time with each mission and strike and have fun with it again. Also, it's good to take generous breaks and play other things when Destiny gets stale... It's going to be around for a long time and by the looks of it with each new expansion Bungie always makes it easy to catch up so don't be afraid to miss out on some stuff because in a 10 year game whatever you missed probably won't be relevant for very long. Read all the grimoire too if you haven't idk how many times I've been inspired to keep playing just because I read 1 great card. (Although, I'd still like an in-game grimoire section accessible from my inventory to open and read new/old grimoire whenever I please 😉)

That music...it hits a "chord" within me that is comfortable and soothing. I don't know what it is..but I honestly had no issues for a long time with grinding the circuit routes on the planets for materials needed to upgrade. Yeah, its FAR better now that you can buy the mats, but before scouring every square inch of each playable area, there were surprises and adventure to be had. It was fun being a noob when everyone else was too. "That's my engram! Don't touch it!"

The root problem that seems much more probable now is there was NEVER a long term plan after all. While marketing said "we have 10 years of investment lined up", the actual rollout has demonstrated this story and it's "feeling" as many mention was only thought out in a limited fashion ("if the first release goes well enough we'll figure out where to go next" type of thinking). The grimoire and lore paints a picture there is a lot of thought put to the original story line when in fact, Bungie's own comments and streams clearly show there never was a full 10 year arc planned. Sure, there was the leaked timeline showing code drops at periodic times but those were only milestones for financial commitments. The reason the "feeling" has changed is because they have had different people leading the team at different times. There was never a single arching story/canon that each group held their respective releases to. Heck, they even had to reorganize and start the Live team only a year into the deal as a way to inject new material. That kind of thing should have been a part of the original plan all along... But wait... It didn't... BECAUSE THERE WAS NO PLAN. The only way you'll get that exact same feeling back is if the previous Design Lead takes over again (oh wait, he left the company right before launch). Sooooo, love it the way it is. Destiny is still a ground breaking game in many ways and one of the best I've ever played (I'm over the 50 year old mark FYI). I'm in it for the long haul regardless because it combines multiple genres we all like together into one game. Keep hoping Bungie stays funded for a good while...

The first year of Destiny. Nightfalls gave you the blue flame but to bad they were to hard. Raids had raid material. You would eventually max. Only doing end game content. But it was to hard. Heroics were actually Heroics and have you a crazy rep boost. But Heroics were to hard. Supers hit like trains. But they were to powerful. Can anyone help out and name a few things about the beginning of Destiny that was to hard or to powerful?

          • Year One gave the satisfaction of completing an entire raid with friends, and being level 30 took time lol along getting Fatebringer (still my favorite hand canon) when hell Icebreaker, Gjallarhorn, all the exotics when you fist got one was like OMG I got something over OP. Then the rewarding feeling of seeing Gjallarhorn drop lol or buying it (can't deny you didn't buy any for your alts :P) I will say to me Taken King almost had a rewarding feeling to it, until the post no elemental for your first slot. Not sure if it was changed :-/... But the year one pvp was ok as Titans no one complained about them ( except fist of panic) You have to compliment the bladedancer takes skill to play if you ask me, and the Warlocks in general made PvP a blast from throw their bombs to reviving their team. When Y2 PvP Sunbreaker NERF them!!! (Instantly) But I do miss Y1 :-( I'll leave with a joke lol with the first time I went to raid... Hey Matt do you have an Icebreaker? Replied no... How do not have one didn't. Replies again didn't have the coins. Them how much were you short 1...

Neither Y1 nor Y2 were that good. Y1 story was "Ok I revived you, go introduce yourself to these dim witted races of aliens without asking why, how, when or where you are, or why I chose to revive you". Only things that were good in Y1 was the weapons actually being able to kill PvE enemies pretty well, Crucible wasn't such a lag and unbalanced sh*t stain, armor perks were awesome, VoG raid was cool as well as the gear, there were elemental primaries, and most of the exotics actually FELT exotic. Now in Y2 just flip all those positives and you get the best of the best negatives. The storytelling was slightly improved, but still just as shoddy and unimaginative as Y1. Like why the hell would an ascendant Hive leader such as Oryx, who is older than Earth itself, come to our solar system... fall prey to human emotion just to avenge his f**king son?! That was his primary focus, not the fact that he should try to control Rasputin to blow us sky high from orbit, "take" various races and pit them against us with overwhelming force, or better yet take SIVA and whats coming in Rise of Iron to utterly obliterate us with spliced Fallen. Just absolutely pathetic how Bungie wasted a great opportunity to properly introduce a Hive leader who has dominated countless worlds, is older than Earth hell even our solar system itself potentially, no doubt is a very tactical warlord, and can manipulate the Taken powers... to only make him a weak father who fell prey to human emotion and turn out to be another cliché "Good vs Bad" in such a stupid fashion. The only thing that interested me was Eris Morn's dialogue when she took a shard of Oryx's sword. When she referred to a Queen did she mean Mara Sov... or a Queen of the Hive? Will we see a true Hive leader show us just what they're capable of, or will she fall just like Oryx did in such a terrible way? And if it is a Hive Queen, females are usually more cruel and vindictive than males in hierarchy - Brush up on "Bloody Mary" and Lucrezia Borgia and you'll see what I mean. Bungie had better make this Queen far more disturbing and cunning than Oryx's stupid plan of avenging his son if she comes to the Destiny universe.

              • I can understand what you're saying, but I think the rich story is still there-- I think you're missing it. Cayde-6's stash in the cosmodrome, taking us to the top of the launch vehicle, and then Rasputin's bunker explorations, and more-- these keep us in touch. In the coming DLC the wall has crumbled and we once against set out and explore new areas of our heritage. Read the grimoire cards-- they are rich in information and knowledge that flesh out the store-- everything from political intrigue to the origins of Oryx, and Varik's designs for the Fallen. The richness fo where and how certain weapons came to be, and the true power of the Vex, what they hope to do, and even coverage of the other Warmind-- Charlemagne, which is very likely the one we found in the top of the tower on Mars-- and Rasputin is trying to connect with Charlegmagne and bring it back online. The Destiny world has many doorways into things, not all known or explored-- many are for future growth. I remember finding one of the doorways to Rasputin's bunker in year one-- not every mentioned in the story-- and voila, with the Taken King, that doorway now had meaning. Find ghosts, find calcified fragments, do quests for your character, even if they seem insignificant-- they may have critical importance to other qwest lines down the road. Every time I go to the tower and I sit and look out at the Traveler and the city below-- and marvel at the effects achieved with the weather, the moving bodies of the solar system and all the lighting and cloud/wind affects-- I am amazed at how much of a world they have created to draw people in-- in ways even Halo could not. I would not tout Halo-- the only really good Halo games were the 1st and the 4th. The rest of wave/swarm style games that may have good art, but they lack hugely in the most important aspect of the game-- the relationship between Halsey, Master Chief, and Cortana. Turning Cortana into the ultimate threat in Halo5 was a wrong-turn. Really a bad way to go, and in the end, that may doom the franchise because they essentially pushed to a conclusion where the relationship between Cortana and John-117 cannot continue-- and worse, he can't keep his promise to her. Maybe they'll pull the fat out of the fire-- but if it isn't 'plausible'... it won't wash. Destiny, so far, has far better continuity, IMHO. I would say, give Bungie time-- they actually do listen, do care, and are working constantly to improve the experience. I wish more people understood the monumental effort it is to do what they have done with this game, technically and artistically.

              • I think they've done a good job with the feel of the game. It can't be all about happy days, the world had that and then it was all destroyed and lost to us. We're blazing the path back to a golden age. It's an apocalyptic setting that still feels bright and hopeful, which can be hard to pull off, and I only really get that from Destiny and Fallout.
