Hmm, have you been getting shortcuts? Most areas have a layout that lets you open up shorter paths. For example, an elevator in the area before Vordt that lets you get from the very first bonfire in High Wall to his bossroom in around a minute.
Where are you specifically? Some areas have dumber shortcuts than others, and there are some weird bonfire spots you can miss easily.

Well, I changed from an assassin to a warrior. It made a world of difference. Found the key for my new friend but when i got on the elevator to the short cut, I accidentally stepped off and when I tried to get back on, I rolled into the freaking elevator shaft. So didn't get the short cut and then died trying to find my lost souls... Pretty sure that means I lost 8000 for good. But the good news is, chopping em down instead of dancing for my life with the warrior.
