In The End, Progress Always Wins

For much of history, culture wars have been staunchly fought between all sides of the aisle. But if there is one thing to learn from history, it is that opinions and policy change, people change, votes change and, as always, we sit on the proverbial rope in the ongoing tug-of-war between light and dark, left and right. Where I'm getting at is that progress is always inevitable. We live in an ever evolving and flowing society, there are times where things go so far in one direction, people lose sight of what is truly important and end up in a place we really don't want to be. Civil rights, labor rights, minimum wage, 5 day 40 hour working week, LGBT rights, gay marriage, decriminalization of homosexuality, women's suffrage, abolition of slavery, list goes on. These movements succeeded because they fought adamantly for social justice, they fought adamantly for the greater good, and even in the face of fierce conservative opposition, social progress is always triumphant. While periods of conservative bout are at times unavoidable, progress always returns ever stronger. American author Chuck Klosterman writes, “Everyone knows history is written by the winners, but that cliché misses a crucial detail: Over time, the winners are always the progressives. Conservatism can only win in the short term, because society cannot stop evolving (and social evolution inevitably dovetails with the agenda of those who see change as an abstract positive). It might take seventy years, but it always happens eventually.” To quote John Lennon, you may call me a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. History has been defined by those who dreamt big, Martin Luther King always envisioned a society where you aren't discriminated based on the colour of your skin, and for as long it was possible, it was a cause that many felt that was worth fighting for, and it was because of their drive to succeed, they emerged as the victors. These ideas of progress, are always considered radical in the beginning, but they eventually become the foundation of our being, and they are always opposed by those who wish to preserve the status quo, but little do they know that they always fight a losing war.
