Are people born with a moral compass?
Do you think that morality is something a human is born with, or something it is taught. Are good and evil simply subjects that most of humanity has agreed on? Or deep down, would we know what's right and wrong, even if we were never taught it?
I think morality is taught. What leads me to believe this is the recent story of an escaped convict from North Korea's labor Camp 13. A boy turned in his mother to be killed for trying to escape, and he didn't feel any guilt or remorse.

Some people are just assholes no matter what. I think some of it is taught and some of it is inherent. It probably varies heavily from person to person. If people legitimately enjoy being assholes, and many do, no amount of trying to teach niceness will ever stick.

There was once an experiment in young children, too young to speak. The children were exposed to two identical hand puppets, with the only difference being the color hat they wore. The one with the blue hat was shown to enjoy candy and offered it to the kids who gladly accepted. The one with the red hat was shown to enjoy vegetables instead and offered it to the kids who rejected the offer. Later, when in the presence of both puppets, the children choose not only to favor the one who enjoyed candy, but to go out of their way to harm the one who enjoyed vegetables instead. [spoiler]Moral of the story is kids are born to hate those that aren't like them. It is a mentality that allows them to simplify the world. Apparently most people never grow out of it and this is how we get racism and bigotry. Even trivial things like astrology stem from the need to categorize people based on categories that may have no actual effect on their personality just to help simplify this complex world we live in.[/spoiler]

We're born with some basic morality that can either be conditioned out of you or expanded on.
