I've dropped probably somewhere between 100-150 over the past 4-7 days or so and have only one 310 item and a 290 to show for it. Everything else a whiff. Is it because the expansion hits soon? This is the worst stretch of return I've ever seen on 3 of coin, especially during IB. Curious if anyone else is seeing same.
Edit: There's some good feedback here, I appreciate it y'all. Anyone wanting to read on and maybe learn something you didn't already know.....that's great take what you will from the feedback. There are helpful folks here though. Live & learn.
It would appear at least part of my recent poor return rate is user error, as I suspected. It looks like I have at times used too many 3coin at once, and/or in too rapid a succession rate one game to the next in pvp. However, placing multiple 3coin at once may yield multiple engram drops, although the odds for that kind of drop happening do not increase. In either scenario, it appears the return rate on regular, small (1-3) 3coin bets spaced apart by at least 7 - 10 minutes, yields the best results.
As fortune has had it, when I've placed as many as 25 or 40 - 3coin at once I've only ever received a single engram drop, and sometimes none. I've never received a multi-engram drop as others have. Some of this may have come from bad timing on my part.
Edit 2:
Synopsis if you don't want to read everything:
There are a fair amount of instances where folks have received more than one engram while dropping 50 - 100 3coin at a time on one boss. Look at the math though, and even if you were lucky enough to receive 5 engrams for 100 3coin placed at once, the return rate is poor (20% return) compared to the slow & steady method where you're dropping 1-2 3coin at once, but spaced with enough time to allow for cool down of at least 10 min = much higher return rate being reported here by a large margin.
At least one person is reporting multiple (2) engrams from a single 3coin. This is only the second time I've heard of this, so from what I've seen it's rare = a 200% return. I'm sure a 200% return rate isn't what Bungie intended to happen a high percentage of the time, because it would render the system pointless. Why not just give them out for free in that case? So, take what you hear reported with a grain of salt.
3coin use works pretty much like a mutual fund investment in the stock market = dollar cost averaging. You put into it on a steady, predictable basis (whatever that means to you....as long as you allow for minimum 3coin cool down time) whether the market is up or down and over the long haul your return on the investment has its best potential for upside.
Sure, you can gamble a multiple 3coin stack all at once hoping for a multiple engram drop, but that's risky and has a much lower return rate. It's exactly the same with the stock market when buying high risk commodities. The return can be relatively high, but it can also go bust very easily.
**Whether or not the returns on 3coin have been poor in the recent past, even when used in a way that increases higher returns probability, the reported experiences are mixed.
