ABOUT THIS STORY... (I blame random Hulu picks for this)

Alright, so we already know that the story of Destiny was something huge and complex back when Joseph Staten was still involved, and since then the game's plot has just been reworked into oblivion. Now since the Grimoire Cards are essentially the remnants of that masterpiece, the fact still remains that NONE OF THAT IS ACTUALLY IN THE GAME. I don't care how awesome Nathan is as Cayde-6, a voice actor who plays his part with flying colors does NOT a story make. In fact when I gave my own review for TTK I actually gave it a rating of Nathan Fillion because, let's face it, without him the whole damn thing would've just tanked and I think you know that. *Looking at Bungie* The biggest gripe I have with Destiny's story, aside from it being bare bones and practically non-existent, is how friggen cliche it is. I mean Light vs. Dark, you don't get anymore cliche than that. That's like super basic. I enjoy stories that make you think and leave an actual imprint on you. And reason I'm bringing this up is because I randomly decided to watch something on Hulu that I had been meaning to watch for years now called Revolutionary Girl Utena, the Movie. Quite literally the whole thing was nothing but allegory and metaphors which played into a plot that leaves you feeling confused yet enlightened at the exact same time. (Warning you ahead of time, its a head trip) Simply put as I'm sitting there taking like a half hour alone to just process everything I had just watched, I glanced at my computer and creative thoughts just started to flow. The Traveler is thought to be the Light and the Guardians are born from that to fight against the Darkness. But what if this isn't true? When a Guardian is brought into the world, they start off as a corpse left behind from the Collapse, and a Ghost revives the body that no longer possesses memories and that person is basically reborn. Now, "SUPPOSEDLY" there were survivors and the Traveler somehow managed to stave off the darkness and now protects the Last City. Here is where my thoughts start to come in... What if the reality is that no one actually survived the war? What if the Traveler being found and ushering in a Golden Age is all just a fabrication? The Earth was no longer able to sustain the burden of Humanity. Technology continued to advance and the average life span increased. There was a Golden Age, a time of innovation and exploration. But it was soon followed by darkness... Wars broke out over diminishing resources and land. Exos were created during this time to reanimate the dead soldiers, to keep fighting a thought to be never ending conflict. But it did eventually end, with no winners to claim victory. The fallout (Ha~) left their worlds in total ruin. Facing the inevitable fate, they devised a means to survive. They created a mass reservoir of living data, a thriving network which contained all of their accumulative knowledge and memories. Then...they died... Leaving behind a massive sphere possessing an imprint of every remaining survivor. Everyone lived on within this false reality, this astral illusion. It soon formed into a collective consciousness known today as the Traveler. However, there were some who could not be contained. Some souls that were too strong willed to be fooled by this lie. And so, the Traveler thought to distract them... These souls, these individuals who possess a powerful will, are the Guardians themselves. The Traveler seeds their awareness into a new vessel, taking a corpse and recreating their flesh while striping them of all memory. They are given a new world to live in, and a common threat to fight against. All of it a lie, all of it a distraction from the real truth. That civilization ended long ago and that now Humanity exists within a prison known as God, the new Ruler of this world. The Speaker knows this, an extension of the Traveler used to misdirect the Guardians while the Ghosts serve to keep close watch on their actions. In this sense, Light is the illusion, it is a fantasy which blinds those who gaze into it. Meanwhile, Darkness is the harsh truth, the reality that we and our world died long ago...no more than a fleeting memory... I want the Destiny story to be something deep like that. I had all kinds of other thoughts regarding the alien races and such as well but I figured this was already getting long enough and I don't feel like getting cut off mid-explanation. But yeah, there's my feedback on what I'd like to see happen for the game's plot. Obviously not specifically what I have written, but something that actually gets you thinking and has deeper meaning than just "Light vs. Dark." EDIT: You know, come to think of it I didn't realize just how screwed up that would be too. I mean think about it, the Crucible? How PvE is setup like a grind and players are just on a never ending hamster wheel with no real meaningful goals? Its funny, when I was writing this it didn't hit me until JUST NOW how what I have here literally breaks the 4th Wall with how this game is designed. Like we the players ARE in fact the Guardians and the game itself is what the Traveler has presented us with so as to waste our time and distract us from the truth. Holy Crap, I promise I'm not high, LOL!

      • Utena is an argument in and of itself Destiny's story should be more fleshed out, and it's fine for it to have philosophical elements, but it should not be heavier than Halo.

        • Pretty good, hopefully bungie's story for destiny that's slowly unfolding( crawling speed) will actually be something good. What you wrote sure was interesting! I hope destiny's story turns out better than the story from 1-3 of Halo. Halo had a very interesting and compelling story ( I'm a bit against 343's story direct, it feels like a plot I've seen somewhere before). The grimoires are really interesting to read, wish I had all of them honestly. It would be great if they actually made some media on Destiny as well ( meaning canon animation storied, i.e. Eris' Fireteam Against Crota, we know what happens already so it would be great to see it played out as a film). Just my opinion though, but I feel like they do enjoy egging us along with fragments of the story. Maybe more is in store for us? Somewhere in the distance...

The original story before it was screwed up... The Vex were the focal point. You are Dr Shim... While conducting research on Venus (the archive) into the Vex. You discover that the Vex object you have is running a perfect simulation of the universe, and inside that simulation is a perfect representation of your research team conducting the same experiment. Which in itself is making a perfect simulation, which in itself is making a perfect simulation. (Like looking into multiple mirrors)... The research team then realize that they too might be a simulation, so they decide that the only way to know for sure if they are real or not. Is to have a Warmind enter the black garden, as a Warmind is too complex to simulate. If they are simply a simulation the Vex will turn them off... So you Dr Shim, go to the Cosmodrome to have Rasputin enter the Black Garden (Which why you wake up in the Cosmodrome)... Once Rasputin has entered the Black Garden, he meets the Darkness... Which proves we are in reality, but it brings us into the attention of the Vex and the Darkness. The Vex want to have complete control over the Universe like they have complete control over their Digital world. Now you have to ask why do they have the ability to run multi simulations? In an effort to have complete control over the universe the Vex created time travel. But the problem is every time they go back in time it creates another universe/timeline. (multiverse) That's where the Traveler comes in...It's referred to as the "Gardener" as every time there is a unfavorable timeline it comes in to end that civilization. As maybe all timelines eventually over lapse? But it can also help grow that time line/universe to something the Vex favors.

I am not knocking you. I just don't put that much thought into it although I do agree that the story is a little shallow. However like I said, I get to kill shit and relieve some stress and just have fun so I am happy with it.

                • Mans search for meaning in nothing. I like the interpretation. Sounds a lot like the Rasputin simulation theory from early year one, that instead of the memories of the golden age being from the traveler as you say, the guardians and the darkness are all a fabrication of Rasputin the warmind to continue simulating the collapse and eternal war... It is a warmind after all. The part you lost me on was the 'souls that refused to die' bit. What are they coming back to really accomplish if the darkness, the reality of the fallen Galaxy invaded by aliens and vex, is so infinite. They exist to no end. This is why I think the darkness being the fabrication of the traveler makes more sense, in line with the original story ideas leaked a few years ago. Everyone died in the collapse, but to sustain itself, the traveler resurrects dead warriors to serve it and to motivate them it creates the beings of the darkness (or perhaps just the vex) to motivate them to fight and expand its resources. But regardles, cool story bro. Not saying it as an insult.

                      • The only problem is, if you've read the grimoire : The Fallen have in fact met the Traveler before, on their home world. The Fallen had a Golden Age, like us, but the Traveler left them. They both Worship and Despise the Traveler. Good thoughts, but impossible. Lore already proves as such. Also, not being rude, just making sure nobody is jumping at straws that lead to nowhere :)

Don't get me wrong... But 2/3 of that is basically the story of Halo. War, one sphere with an index of every species worth living, floating somewhere is space, getting activated after the galaxy/galaxies get destructed. Distinct differences: Your sphere is also "The Matrix" and the Galaxy didn't get reseeded. But that's the 1/3 I didn't include :P

                            • Aside from your idea sounding slightly like The Matrix, I like it. Especially your 4th wall break posed by the whole thing. It's cool, but not something I think that the story will turn into. I see the story of Destiny kind of like the story to Diablo. A bunch of Saturday morning cartoon heroes go beat up the bad guy and make stuff nice again till the next one shows up. That's pretty much all we have. Too bad they can't present the story to us with a little more exposition so we could know what the hell is actually happening at that specific moment. An example is the opening cutscene of the Taken King. We see the Queen open a rift and call her Harbingers out to blow the crap out of Oryx's ship. I knew they were the Harbingers because I'd read the Grimoire. For the rest of the people who don't like to read, they're left completely in the dark (haha) as to what the hell she's doing and why they cause so much damage. Maybe in the cutscene we should have gotten the Queen calling upon the Harbingers while she summons them, specifically calling them her Harbingers and sending them to destroy Oryx. Oh well, I can only hope we get more cutscenes with the next DLC, and an actually coherent story in Destiny 2.
