You know, the most common argument made whenever a video of a police officer(s) beating the shit out of an unarmed and other wise nonviolent person or of police misconduct in general surfaces is the old "just a few bad apples" argument. The basic idea is that not all police are bad just a few and we shouldn't judge the actions of all police by the actions of a few bad apples.
However, here's the issue with that. If we really had a system that took police misconduct seriously then we'd have cases where police misconnect was treated equally as serious as any other criminals crimes are, but time and time again the police force shields the crocked cops from punishment.
Case in point. A Grand Jury typically has an indictment rate of 99%. In the legal world a
Grand Jury is basically just a rubber stamp for the prosecution. Because of this a common saying was formed; "A Grand Jury would indict a ham sandwich." The Grand Jury comes before a trial and in theory it is suppose to rule out cases that the state does not have enough evidence to even bring to trial but in practice it is simply a rubber stamp for the prosecution. Only in cases (typically) corruption cases are indictments not given out.
Case in point: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/12/04/nyregion/grand-jury-said-to-bring-no-charges-in-staten-island-chokehold-death-of-eric-garner.html?referer=&_r=0
A police officer was given the 1% exception from this rubber stamp due to the systemic issues we have in the police forces around the country. Nobody wants to be a rat and so nobody testifies when there is police abuse. The cops that protect the "bad apples" add to a systemic problem in this country and that's reflected by the lack of police convictions and lack of grand jury indictments. So, while not every cop is involved in misconduct, true, but their refusal to testify against the bad ones who are doing misconduct makes the entire police force rotten.
Very rarely in cases of police misconduct are the police ever held responsible and often only get paid leave or are paid to go to a training program.
Check out the facts. Protecting a bad apple is being a bad apple and our entire system is rotten to the core.
