I’m against all marriage. Marriage was invented as a means of transferring ownership of women from their fathers to their husbands, and while that is no longer literally true, a lot of the misogynistic ideas still present in marriage today stem from that. In addition, religion is still very much tied to marriage, and while not everyone who marries is religious (due to the legal benefits), religion has absolutely no place being tied to a legal union in a country that allows freedom of (and from) religion. Furthermore, while I acknowledge the legal benefits of marriage, we can change the system so that people can have those benefits without it being tied to the history of marriage and its ties to religion and misogynistic power structures. And lastly, I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I sure as fūck don’t need a legal document to prove to someone that I love them and am committed to them. The staggering divorce rate (especially in heterosexual couples) proves that marriage doesn’t keep people together if they don’t love and trust each other.
Edit: lol @ all the people who came in here expecting a lesbian to spew homophobic bullshit.

Some companies have become progressive and now offer medical benefits to your significant other even if you aren't married but that's only a slight step in the right direction. While I do see your point of not needing the label of marriage, it is one thing to say and another to put into practice. The government does not and will not reform laws unless enough people feel strongly about a topic, case and point gay marriage. Corporations, unless they are progressive, will not offer medical benefits unless you are legally married. The piece of paper you don't want is so critical to the legal system, corporations, the government, and some individuals. It's basically a "serious" commitment on paper even if the relationship is illegitimate or going swimmingly. The paper is legal power and there isn't enough of an outcry to change it. So say what you will about marriages roots, meaning, and practice. It boils down to the legal benefits it can bestow.

Oh, well... It's okay. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself.

I believe the balance we have have now is fine. The misogynistic aspects of marriage are no longer applied, yet the notion of a greater commitment still keeps people motivated to be with each other. Although that motivation may exist without legal documentation, it's still a construct that most of the time makes people committed, as they gave vows that they should ideally keep in heart.

that is not what it is or what it was. your honestly dumb

Editado por VenustheMurder: 11/29/2015 7:48:51 AMI understand what you are saying. However, and just for the sake of argument, how would be marriage be abolished? Would it slowly be fazed out? It would immodestly be stamped out? I'm curious as to the process rather than the reason. You say you support the notion of no marriage but do you honestly think this is something that should be implemented? Can it even be implemented? Should a couple be forced to have this happen to them? Do you honestly think this is something that has to be implemented and seen through or are you just sharing an ideal that you believe in but won't act on it?

Was expecting something different... I basically always disagree with you, but you make some really good points. I agree there needs to be another way other than marriage to get tax benefits, and I agree that religion and marriage can be a bad combination. All in all I support marriage just because it's just an official way to say "I'm taken" if someone trys hitting on you. It's just a symbol of love and essentially a lifetime commitment of friendship. But then however you have those people that propose like -blam!-ing instantly, I honestly know of 2 relationships (people I actually know irl) that got proposed in 2 weeks and were all like "oh I love him, oh we're moving to Iowa in 2 months and getting married". -blam!-ing disgusting. As always, time is the ultimate test, low and behold it didn't last (if it would have then I'd be happy for them but I mean really though, 2 weeks of knowing eachother, like what the -blam!- people). Anyway... that's my take on it... have a nice day ma'am.
