How to use Sniper Rifle in Crucible

I am very new to gaming (modern gaming anyways). In the first 4-6 weeks of playing destiny I couldn't break 500 points in Crucible. I worked at it and eventually could top the charts... since reduced to middle ranking in IB. Recently I thought I would expand my skills by learning to be a Sniper, but I don't get how to do it in Destiny. 1) I find that I settle into a spot and end up getting killed by someone with a euros regime or other high powered non-sniper gun... whats the point of a sniper rifle if the other guns have the same range without losing mobility or sight? Am I doing something wrong here? An example would be sniping by C facing B on Venus map (maat mons I think its called). 2) it seems like there are not many snipe points, so if I try to hunker down, I get maybe two kills until I am hunted down. Tips? Tricks?

Prydeth's revenge, the dead orbit sniper, P&t, Efreedit's Spear, ice breaker, black hammer, the ldr. Any of these. They have good (except maybe ice breaker) stability and high rof. Sniping is all about understanding "traffic lanes". I recommend you start with control because the lanes are more constant with people running to objectives. You need to find a place were you can see that lane and wait. Crouch and hold still to take yourself off the minimap. Don't stay scoped in. Your snipers red dot is a dead giveaway, your peripheral vision is hampered, and you'll get shotgunned in the back of the face... a lot. After you get a few kills move to a spot were you can see the snipers perch you just left. I get a lot of kills shooting people trying to rush my first roost and get fusion rifely vengeance. Learn to use advantageous perks. Hunter and or the p&t invisibility can boost your survivability a lot. Chain of woe is useful. Final round let's several snipers kill with a single body shot. Ap rounds can shoot thru walls. Etc. Lastly. Have a back-up primary that can work at multiple ranges of engagement. Hand cannons like hawkmoon, thorn, Timur's Lash. Or pulses like bad juju, red death, or over soul edict. Good luck fellow long gunner. May your inbox ever be filled with hate mail. Edit: The new "hidden hand" perk gives an insane boost to aim assist. If your having trouble getting head shots, this will make the perfect set of training wheels. New queens sniper also has a silly amount of baby bumper auto target for you new cross postal code killers. Second edit: The Capri sting's invisibility is very useful if you like to run gunslinger.
