Look, I'm not gonna pretend it was all sunshine and roses before bungie.new, but it was a hell of a lot better of a community than it is now.
Quite frankly, this website has the worst community I've seen, barring the obvious ones like 4chan. The members are rude, disrespectful, insulting, and overall (and I don't use this word often) toxic. They showcase the absolute worst that gaming has to offer, and only serve to perpetuate the stereotype of gamers being angry manchildren. And something has to be done.
When the Flood forum was getting out of hand years back, the Play Nice rules went into effect, and in my opinion something like that needs to happen right now. The behavior that these members have isn't just prevalent, but encouraged in the forms of receiving likes and followers; often times, the worst offenders have tens if not hundreds of followers. These aren't alts, folks. They are main accounts, and people have no fear of them getting banned.
It perpetuates a cycle where others see these popular, for lack of a better term, members behave the way they do, and that behavior goes unpunished. So they repeat what they see, and the cycle begins anew.
I know there's a mute function, but here's my problems with that. If I muted everyone in #Destiny that insulted me, it'd look like a barren wasteland. But most importantly, muting (read: hiding) bad behavior doesn't change that there's bad behavior. Hiding a problem doesn't fix the problem.
This is the new generation of Bungie fans: bitter, angry, and disgusting human beings. And Bungie is implicitly cultivating these people with the inaction around here. There are times when I really want to stop using this site and interacting with the community, and no more is that true than right now.
If you made it to the end, thank you for the taking the time to read.
