I think it would be a cool feature to add a level of mystery and excitement to weapons/armor/vehicles, if say you found some equipment and could use it straight away, just with one catch;
You know nothing about it until you find relevant data stores or knowledgeable NPCs that grant the ability to view its history, battles it has seen, it's creators and owners previous.
This also grants the ability to extend features and uses via it's skill tree.

Many of you may associate this notion with elements of Diablo II, however, it would be more accurate to associate this idea with Phantasy Star Online ep1+2, where you brought "????" item to the 'tekker' who identified the item, adding stats, unlocking abilities and disclosing the items description.
