Here is part 26 of Into the Hellmouth! As per usual, if you like it, give it a bump, and tell me what you think down below! Here's part 25 if you missed it, and in the meantime, stay classy guardians!
As they walked, the Guardians began asking Toland more questions. “That sword they were carrying,” Eriana said, “that was Crota’s sword, was’t it?”
“Aye,” Toland confirmed. “The Darkest blade the Hive ever forged. It was made specifically for Crota - a blade that would allow him to yield his power - his millennia-old hatred - as a weapon that would destroy the light. Once and for all. His chief General - Sardon, the Fist of Crota, personally commanded the Swarm Princes as they forged the mighty blade.”
“Sardon?” Eriana asked.
“You saw him just a few minutes ago,” Toland replied. “He was the knight at the end of the procession - the Swarm Princes were the ones protecting Crota’s sword.” He looked back at Vell. “You’ve dueled with him before,” he said.
Vell nodded grimly. “So this, Sardon, is one of these Swarm Princes?” he asked.
Toland frowned. “In a stretch of the concept, sure,” he said. “He is their lord and master. They are his generals.”
Vell cracked his knuckles. “Sounds like my kind of fight,” he said.
Omar snorted. “What isn’t?”
Vell pretended not to hear him. “Eris and Eriana said the Blades rose first and slaughtered our brothers and sisters,” he said. “If the one who leads their charge is within reach, I mean to end him—to end them all.”
“We are here for Crota,” Eris said, frowning.
Toland sighed. “I’m afraid each disciple is Crota,” he said.
Vell nodded. “Then it must be done. Know that I have faith in your Light, as I do in my own.”
“This isn’t about faith,” Eris said.
Eriana nodded in agreement. “It’s about vengeance.”
Vell flashed an irritated look at them. “It’s about the only thing that matters—victory. It’s about doing what we must to end this terror.” And if that means I have to wield one of those swords again, I will, he thought.
Eris put a hand on his shoulder. He looked back at her, staring at her Helmet. “We will face them all,” she said, “together. We have no time to fight individual battles.”
Vell nodded, inwardly sighing with relief. He would welcome a fellow Guardian by his side.
Toland chuckled grimly. “I have no doubt the Fist will welcome your challenge, Titan,” he said. “When we face him, you will lead the charge.” He clapped Vell on the shoulder. “Come, Crota's Temple lies ahead. If we can breach it, I'm sure another fight awaits.” And with that, the fire team fell into silence.
They caught sight of the procession again a few minutes later. It was entering a metal door that seemed to descend into the depths of Luna’s surface. As the procession filed inside, two knights broke off from the procession. Each went to one side of the door, appearing to stand guard. Almost simultaneously, they each planted the tips of their swords into the ground, and rested their hands on the sword pommels.
Eriana grinned. “Omar, Sai,” he said, “I think you two could both use a little target practice.”
Omar grinned. “That we could,” he said. Sai and him grabbed their sniper rifles, and lay prone at the top of of the nearby hill. “I’ll take the one on the left, you get the one on the right,” he whispered.
Sai nodded.
Omar frowned. “Wait,” he said, “can you even see through -“
“I’ve got telemetry in the scope,” her ghost said, “I see for her.”
Omar nodded. “Right,” he said. He looked down the rifle scope. “On my count,” he said, “Three. Two. One.” He took a deep breath. “Fire.” He squeezed the trigger.
The rifles both went off simultaneously. Sai’s knight went down without a sound, a gaping hole appearing where it’s face used to be. Omar’s knight howled, grasping at it’s face, before a follow up shot silenced it forever.
The swords fell to the ground.
Omar frowned, and looked over at Sai. “Why’d yours go down so much easier?” he asked.
Sai reloaded her rifle, and strapped it to her back. “Armor piercing rounds,” she said, “burned out his skull. Banshee was experimenting with them, and, well, I’ve done him a few favors over the years. He let me have some for free.” And with that, she walked toward the entrance.
Omar blinked, and looked over at his ghost. “Remind me to do a a few favors of my own for Banshee when we get back,” he said.
“Noted,” it replied.
The Guardians advanced on the Temple. Vell picked up one of the swords, looking it over. He felt a hand on his shoulder, and turned around to see Toland staring at him.
Vell looked down at the sword once more. Then, he looked back up at Toland. The old Warlock nodded. “Take it,” he said. “You know what to do.”
Vell nodded. He turned back towards the tunnel, just in time to see Sai dash through the doorway, sword in hand. “Hey!” he shouted. But she was already gone. Vell looked back at the rest of the fireteam. “Well,” he said, “I suppose we have to go after her.”
“Agreed,” said Omar, “let’s hurry before she gets us all killed.” And with that, the Guardians dashed into the Temple of Crota.
