It's a complicated issue... It's not right, or fair, or justified. It is however complicated and kinda interesting, if you'd be so inclined to explore my thought on it. So let me give you a bit of back ground on myself I find psychology and sociology some of the most interesting things in the world, and study them, as of the last few year's the gaming/"Nerd" community has been-- in a social upheaval. Form different groups with agendas, people who find it a place to make money, to push a political agenda, to begin re-education the list goes on and on. First I wanna say; people are just shit. Give a PERSON; man, woman, trans, gay, bi, straight, black, white, hispanic etc. A forum of anonymous speech and they will undoubtedly abuse it. PEOPLE are shit, and these people love to treat other people like shit. I've known plenty of woman who use men and women, abuse them emotionally, break them and then leave them destroyed for what's left of their friends and family to pick up. I've seen men do the same. On another level were in the middle of this "THING" this SJW movement, like stated before. With much of "Nerd" culture being attacked. ten to fifteen years ago, this was a hobby dominated by social outcast; men and women who didn't fit in and found escape in gaming and other Nerd culture. Move forward to the last few years. Gaming is the biggest entertainment industry, it's a fledgling all-things-considered, Movies are primarily based off of preexisting properties, most of them graphic novels, and the ones that are not are teen books with large fan-bases. UNFORTUNATELY we don't live in a world where people are respected for the content of their character, and viewed as a human-being. We have race, gender and sexual politics. This in-and-of-it's sell is harmless, people can do what-ever they want fight for whatever they want, and create whatever they want. HOWEVER, HUMAN BEING ARE SHIT!!! So in a world where people scream for equality, that equality only comes when what's viewed as the dominant sexuality, race and gender (read as straight, white, male.) becomes subservient to everyone else. This isn't equality, so much as it's changing the perceived social order. Now what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? Well a-lot, indulge me please. I'm going to deviate for a moment with a story, it's how my favorite band got their name. I love the Cruxshadows they started in 1992 and have heavy roots in the 80's Goth/punk movement. They are a goth synth band , but not in the way people would traditionally think, their music is more uplifting and hopeful, with roots in mythology and telling the stories of great hero's and legends. The lead singer Rouge once explained the bands name like this; ".... The meaning of the word crux shadows boils down to literally, shadows of the cross. It has to be taken a little bit further to understand what that means. When they crucified Christ, it was his most pious followers, the inner circle as it were, that retreated from the crucifixion. That were afraid to be there. It was the outsiders that claimed him (Christ) as their own, that stood in the shadow of the cross. That is significant because the outsider is the inner circle, as opposed to the inner circle being the inner circle. What I (Rouge) created with Cruxshadows is a word that means the beautiful or significant outsider, the inner circle made up of the outsider. And that was, in a lot of ways, how I saw the scene ( Goth Music) at the time as amazing people that were often dismissed by society, and kind of brushed aside. My focus is that maybe we are more significant than people think." Again what does this have to do with anything? Well the "Old Guard" of Nerd culture has always been the outsider. Their the people who play, and make games, movies, books, they share their escapism with people who are looking for escapism from the horrors of the world. Now that culture is worth Billions of dollars, and the outsider is once again being pushed out, because they don't and have never conformed to society. What do you do when someone come into your home and tries to take it away? You fight. There is a second problem in all of this. It would be fine if this was across the board. But it's not. The discrimination isn't against nerd culture, but straight, white male's, because they simply are. Growing up I'd guess most men, where told to respect women, hold open doors for them, pull out their chair, be kind, and respectful with the way they speak to them, never harm a woman, you know where I'm going with this. But now the rules have changed, somewhat for the better, somewhat for the worse, but it's this societal game of spinning plates, one moment what's expected of a "man" is one thing, like stated above. Then the next moment that's oppressive, sexist, misogynistic. Then the next men are sexist, rapist, pigs when they call you a "bitch" because that's what they would say to any guy they argued with. They treat you like a princess, they only want sex. They treat you like an equal, there sexist, rapist pigs. It's like juggling chainsaws, and someone keeps adding to the load. Sooooo, what happens when this is forced on a subculture full of people that are the rejects of society because they couldn't conform to one thing or another, or their interest ostracized them? They become toxic. We are not dealing with the most eloquent of people, and that's not an insult, trash talk is the vernacular of the culture. There is a lot of anger, some of it deep seeded, at home lives at the world, at the very reason these people sought out escapism, and now they are being attacked in their safe place. The world hasn't been to kind to a lot of men or women here. And unfortunately, once attacked in the last place they have they fight back, what they don't realize however is not every straight, man, woman, gay, trans etc, is the enemy and I'm talking about both sides. Deep down people just want to feel accepted and safe. Men to you I say: Not all women are feminazi's here to take you away to some Orwinian-esk boot camp for social re-education, I'd say most women on this bard would happily show woman like that the door, and ask them to leave. Nor are they here for your....advances. And I'm sure most guy's on this board would ask those men (Read as boys) to leave this board as well. Woman don't need men to white knight for them, nor do they need us to play the game for them. Ladies: Not every "bitch" is a sexist insult. Not every man is a rapist in waiting, not every guy who calls you honey or something equal to that is hitting on you, or being sexist, (more so if their from the south its just a thing, part of the vernacular ). Men: ( read as boys) stop trying to pick up women on the internet, she might be into you, she probably isn't. Women. Put on a proper shirt when twitch streaming...You don't get to bitch when you use your body to earn money, then someone objectifies you over the internet. Men: Just because a woman is using her assets to get you to watch her stream does not mean you've gotta watch it, or donate, or be a dick. Men and Women Trans, Gays, and all the spectrum of race people identify with... I have a dream. That one day, we will all live in a community in which we are not judged by our race, creed, or sexual preference BUT by the skill at which we kill one another. Because -blam!- noobs. I have a dream that I can go on any gaming website and see news, fair and balanced without the taint of agenda and re-education, without money lining the pockets of editors. I have a dream that this community will be as welcoming as it once was, as it should be. I HAVE A DREAM that Bungie will give us more vault space and fix there networking code. I HAVE A DREAM that the Speaker will one-day tell us the tales of the darkness. I HAVE A DREAM that one-day the stranger will have time to tell us. I HAVE A DREAM that one-day, you and I and everyone can just enjoy games regardless up who we are.
