Actually there was an episode on mythbusters where they tried such an experiment. They fired a pistol (I forget what model) in a vacuum (no oxygen). My guess what that there was just enough oxygen trapped within the bullet casing to allow for the release of energy when black powder ignites. Just my edumacated guess though. Although it seems like that ninja has a much better understanding of it than I do.
