No significant other should just dismiss and forbid someone from their lifelong dream. They should be supportive. And I never said he had to make a career out of it. Sign up for a couple of years, serve your country, and get a taste of it. If she still doesn't like it (and he's not crazy about it), then he gets out. If he loves it and she doesn't, then they talk it out.
