The problems have nothing to do with latency. There are a several other FIOS posts, so it is likely that there is a congested node along the route between you and bungie, or between bungie and you. I believe I now have at least one game server, but until I am certain I am not making it public. If it is you can check latency. I have several candidates, and pings are averaging 150ms or less.

If there is congestion, latency will be high. A lot of us aren't on FIOS, so the issue is much bigger than one provider. Bungie needs to fix it or cope with it better.

  • Actually I am talking dropped packets, this is what overloaded nodes do. Destiny's servers do not work in the way you think they do. Some of the work a server would do is offloaded to consoles in a peer group. This group then exchanges information directly. This is why a fully working NAT is needed, to allow the consoles to talk to each other. It is also the reason why some players are seeing empty worlds, they couldn't be connected to peers.

I think you need to read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_loss#Effects

  • That only applies to TCP. TCP isn't really suited to real-time activities, such as VOIP, streaming, or real-time online gaming. They tend to use UDP which has no acknowledgement or retransmissions. UDP is a low latency protocol, the packet can be processed faster. When I talk about a node dropping packets, I don't mean intermittently, I mean sustained for a length of time. This means that nothing arrives at the server. The server will interpret this as a closed connection. It will then close the session and the port.

The evidence, observations, and references speak for themselves. Thank you for your input.

Destiny is not a high bandwidth game. Sitting on earth, Destiny is using no more than 35KB/s. There are 2 other players in the zone. As I type this, 1 player has just left the zone and the bandwidth has dropped to 18KB/s. It is averaging at 15KB/s up, and 3.2KB/s down. I have set up a situation that increases latency for my console. It currently has around 700ms delay, So far Destiny has not disconnected it. I have had the latency up to 1000ms with no disconnects or errors. Since info is being shared between peers, there is considerably less load on the servers. The servers only need to look after matchmaking and a few other things such as inventory, etc. Destiny, in all likelihood, will have load-balancers in place. Also what you are suggesting would be illegal in many of the countries Destiny is available.

  • I think the p2p part of Destiny is something that only a few people are starting to understand. Many ISPs, large ones mostly, are blocking or filtering traffic that looks like p2p to control piracy. I rarely get KTO or get any errors at all. Maybe once a week I have an issue and occasionally Xbox Live connections are the bigger problem. I live out in a rural part of Cheyenne WY and only have 5 Mbps WISP in my area and each access point has a NAT. I'm double natted but my ISP directly connects to a local telco for their pipe so there's no filtering or port blocking that I know of. So, for most of the people having issues the causes are varied and it isn't as simple as "Bungie fix your servers" as some people like to claim. It could be the player's system, local NAT router, their modem settings, their ISP, connections or congestion between nodes, etc.

Unfortunately we cannot measure ping to Destiny's servers. I wish we could. I suspect the mass disconnections people have been seeing is due to the (lack of) responsiveness the Destiny server/s and/or their software unable to handle multiplayer demand.
