UPDATE: This original post was regarding a largish group of us unable to connect for the last week or so. Issues have progressed far beyond that point and it has become very clear that Bungie has significant server/software issues and are trying to sort them out. By the way, if servers don't respond, latency will be massive your connections will likely be unable to connect or will timeout (I guess that is obvious).
UPDATE: 12 Nov 14 - Bungie have publicly announced they are aware of a wide-spread issue affecting their services. Hoping they fix it soon.
We are actively investigating issues impacting Destiny services. Until resolved, various Destiny and Bungie.net services may experience disruptions.

My original post:
I wrote a post yesterday that seems to have been deleted by a moderator. In it I explain the reasons many of you are getting disconnected after the latest patch. For me (and a lot of others) Destiny was fine before the last patch. For the last 4-5 days it has been unplayable.
Apart from Destiny's servers unable to handle the load. Yes, they need to add more servers, but they may also be purposely disconnecting you. In a post ( http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/77918858/0/0 ) they respond saying: "Developing a robust solution that does not impact the experience of others takes time." In my original post I reference a similar response to another user. In another post, they respond similarly: "We have two major updates" ... "in development that are intended to reduce the frequency of these errors while maintaining a consistent gaming experience for all users. "
This article explains what happens ( http://www.plugthingsin.com/internet/gaming/ ): "It’s important to realize that many game servers have thresholds for ping rates. If your ping rate is too high, you might be automatically kicked out from the game. Thresholds can be as low as 130 m/s."
Another good summary explains ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping_%28video_gaming%29 ): "ping refers to the network latency between a player's computer (client), and either the game server or another client (i.e. peer)." .... "Servers will often disconnect a client if the ping is too high and it poses a detriment to others' gameplay. Similarly, client software will often mandate disconnection if the ping is too high."
With the last patch Bungie may have lowered the tolerance for their disconnects. If they deem you have a bad (high) ping time, they disconnect you. They do this to try to keep the experience good for those with good (low) ping times.
Also of importance is the ability for Bungie's servers to respond to your requests. Even if they didn't lower the ping threshold, if demand is high enough, the servers won't be able to cope with the demand and response times are affected, hence raising latency (ping time).
Ping time or RTT (round trip time) is explained here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round-trip_delay_time
Just because your connection is awesome (e.g. 30Mbps download/upload) doesn't mean your ping will be good (low). The path it takes to the server (and of course responsiveness of the server/s) is important as that determines latency of the connection. This is why some people have had success with the ridiculous suggestion of getting their ISP to re-route their pathways (omg, let's change the internet for one game). But, if their servers can't cope, changing the internet won't help either.
So what are the solutions to this predicament?
1. Bungie, improve your servers' responsiveness.
2. Bungie, raise the ping tolerance (if 1. isn't enough).
3. And, if that isn't enough, Destiny needs to be more tolerant of network latency. This would involve more than just raising ping tolerance. It could mean software changes to, for example, store (cache) more content locally, rather than accessing their servers for every thing you do in the game.
And, sure, try all the things Bungie suggest to see if you can get the desired throughput, but you can only take it so far. I agree with the many that say that other online games work, so why spend money on anything else when it isn't guaranteed to fix the situation. We paid money for a working game. It should work.
Why does tracert timeout on Bungie's IP address?
A number of people have asked why tracert times out after the 14th or 16th (etc.) hop. This does not necessarily mean the host is down. Some servers choose not to respond to ping requests (ICMP). This is usually to avoid Denial of Service (DoS & DDoS) attacks. These attacks flood the server with ICMP requests, which then the server responds to (if they are not set to be ignored) and the server becomes unresponsive as it tries to reply to these numerous requests, thus affecting normal traffic. I see the tracert timeout too, but I know the server is up because I can browse it's web page. So, great the Bungie web site is up, how about their game servers? We don't know the IP address to any of their game servers.

Edited by WizardlyOgre: 11/12/2014 6:21:30 AMAt least they have finally acknowledged that there is a problem and stopped constantly blaming our connections despite all the evidence to the contrary... May not be much, but it's a step in the right direction.

3 RepliesFirst of all: thank you for starting this thread! I never had a problem with FIOS before, so this is defiantly disappointing for me. I can’t into the game for more than 3 minutes before I get kick out. I must admit, I’m not your regular user type. I know a thing or two of NAT, server, IT, etc. This is insane to say the least. I pay for the game, PSN service, and my internet. Whoever is responsible for this need to resolve it right away…..we are paying customers! This is not an option of: “we working on it”. Because if I can’t play the game for more than 24 hours, you can pretty much say good bye to me and a bunch of other gamers!

Haha why is it that whenever Bungie try to fix something it just makes 10 other problems flare up?

2 RepliesEdited by NullFoX13: 11/12/2014 11:45:09 PMThank you for your explanation. I also have been plagued by errors and disconnects for the past 2 weeks. I played the game for a month and it was fine, but now. I cant even finish the daily strike without getting kicked to orbit. This is a REAL issue. Should be a priority on Bungies/Sonys agenda. We pay for playstation plus and payed for the game. We are not getting the quality we deserve. I am very disapointed. I also play some free to play games on my pc and have less connection problems with them in comparison with destiny. I hope they resolve this soon, for ALL their paying costummers.

Bungie should make one fan made item or mission to return the favor when they fixed this, the error codes are seriously ridiculous. "What she saying that you owe us" Destiny Campaign Quote when you unlock Mars That quote should be you, except disclude the she part.

4 RepliesJust go to how Bungie recommends how you solve the problem with port forwarding!!! It gives you a link to a port forwarding site that requires that you spend more money to fix the issue!!! It is unbelievable that this is their solution for all of us who purchased a game that is expected to work. I'm so glad that they are providing a DLC when a lot of people can't even play the game without getting booted due to their issues. Awesome!!! Losing faith in Bungie when they have been my favorite for so long. BUNGIE fix the issues NOW!!!

9 RepliesSo I'm getting disconnected for a high ping I never have on a FIOS line I INDEPENDANTLY installed that only has one console on it and that's it. Ping 14-17. ;o)
-
1 ReplyI live in South Africa so I'm connected to the European servers. There is no way my ping won't be high. If they really are doing this then I'm really disappointed and feel it's really unfair. I have over 400 hours in this game and now I'm plagued by constant disconnects.

1 ReplyEdited by Bi9 Daddy Jake: 11/12/2014 11:39:40 AMI don't care about the technical reasons. The game recently has become unplayable for me. As a paying customer I have an expectation that the product will work... call me crazy but I'm now associating Bungie with poor product. I've been getting bee (mostly), fly, eel, and jackrabbit error codes. I have a XB1 and use Verizon FIOS.. all other games and apps and streaming content work fine....destiny crashes constantly. At the moment I regret paying for DLC since it looks like I'll stop playing if not fixed soon.

2 RepliesI just got -blam!-ing disconnected during the nightfall I was fighting the archon priest

39 RepliesJust did a ping test and speed test. Comcast is my provider: Ping test = 0% packet loss Ping = 25 ms Jitter = 3ms My Grade = A Speed Test Ping = 13 ms Download Speed = 20.47 Mbps (wireless) Upload speed = 12.17 Mbps Yep, and I still get disconnected from xbox live.

1 ReplyOn PS4. Since the last update I have seen visable evidence of lag (example - enemies jumping from a ledge then magically reappearing on the ledge). Have never seen this before the last update. At about 6 PM EST today (11/11/14) the repeated disconnects started and continue now (11 PM EST). At present the game is unplayable.

1 ReplyLooks like in the vein of the American dream we got rid of that Communist. Update: Last nights patch seemed to repair the situation I wasn't kicked once last night after 4 crucible matches.
-
2 RepliesIt cant be a ping issue or booting players for having bad internet because my internet is terrible and I rarely see disconnects
-
What if every single gamer suffering constant disconnects didn't buy the DLC? Can we try that? I will not purchase anything more from Bungie until I can play a solid hour uninterrupted. P.S. I really enjoy Destiny. I just can't play it for any length of time. Been that way since day one. #BoycottBungie

3 RepliesIm trying to not hate this game. But slowly the darkness is coming to consume me, and if i have to follow a light, so be it. If it is true that Bungie is purposely disconnecting players, abd thats the reason why i get disconnected and experiencing lag so badly, why am i going to ever purchase the DLC? Or even be anticipated to follow this franchise again?. Time will tell.

Edited by Bo-Deano: 11/12/2014 6:16:52 AMI've been having a problem all day, and I don't feel its on my end. People have been saying that the problem lies with Verizon Fios, which I have, but it looks good to me. Please correct Bungie, Thanks

1 ReplyEdited by Syciun: 11/12/2014 3:40:51 AMPing? Nope. Every other game I get full bars/5-50 ping. They just suck at maintaining a stable game. They aren't used to this type of play.
-
3 RepliesIt sounds a bit conspiracy-ish but i have to say it Would explain the variations in play time as well. Start out good then when u hit that threshold, bye bye. Also why they've been dodging the problem left n right and refuse to give any solid answers to the issue.
-
10 RepliesIn a nutshell, they are ditching the people who don't have a good enough ping - where "good enough" is decided by them. That's why they ask you to upgrade your hardware, re-route ISP pathways etc. It's much harder for them to change software, than to make us buy more stuff in the HOPE your ping will be improved.
-
3 RepliesMy ping to Comcast is 9ms-11ms but I do not know what it is to Microsoft servers. Do you have an IP I can ping to using the cmd prompt?
-
14 RepliesActually, it's not really a ping issue. It's been proven they have multiple nodes, down. What could actually be happening is that there's an overflow and that overflow channels directly through the bad nodes' pathway. It would present like a bad ping as the end user goes node to node but, it's not a ping issue.

Added to original post with reasons for tracert timeout.
