The theory I heard is staten left because they came to him and scrapped his whole story line because they couldn't get a teen rating, he got pissed, left, and they were at a lose of what to do. Making the story teen they got completely lost and couldn't include all the developed areas so they only included what they had "written" for, no matter how poorly written it was. Or at least that's the theory I've heard banded about
